  • Children With Asthma...

My grandson, Antonio suffers from Asthma. We almost lost him several months ago. That should have stopped me from SMOKING but it didn't. I did for a little while but started again.

This past week Antonio got another bout with Asthma. I quit cold turkey. Today makes five days. No problems except for headaches which is decreasing. Each time, I give my grandson a treatment, I become stronger.

I've eating a lot of snacks.heheheh No matter...I use all the energy. Soon the Fireworks will begin. Everyone knows I hate fireworks.

I haven't be able to smell for several months. I'm waiting for an appointment to see a specialist. This morning another miracle happen on my fifth day of not smoking. I can SMELL again.

This thread is about Children with Asthma. Anyone else have a child or children with Asthma? What do you do to make easier for them? Antonio will stay still and be patient a little for treatment. Den he fights me. He grabs the mouth piece and yanks it away from him. I struggle with him to give him his full dose every time. He takes his spray willingly.

Just a hint of a cold makes me worry. A sniffle, a cough sets off a red flag. It's hard when a child has Asthma. His little chest like a pigeon gasping for air. My two daughters suffered from Childhood Asthma too. I hope and pray Antonio grows out of it.

K-den. Suggestions and advice are appreciated.

    Oh boy Auntie!
Both my sons have SEVERE asthma!
Gage has been in the hospiatl numerous times.
When he got a cold I would lay on th floor all night beside him with a machine to help him breathe and we would stay there for 2 or 3 days until he got better.
He would gasp and turn blue. It was terrible!

Then out of the blue the Dr. gave me Singular granules for children! It ids a daily prevention for Asthma and allergies and highly affective and safe. We went from treatments every day and Horrible ASTHMA attacks when sick to No tretaments and very mild attcks when sick...Maybe just one or two puffs on the inhaler every 4 hours! HUGE difference.

My son REFUSES medication and won't even drink juice now because I had to force him for so long.
These granules I put in his milk every single day! He has not had an asthma attck in over 8 months! I wrote a letter to the company!
They are expensive but our HMO paid for it after the Dr. INSISTED.
For any child with asthma I HIGHLY recommend talking to yoru Dr. about this!

Another thing is....my son was terribly strong and I had to fight him so much to give him his treatment. So at the first sign of a cold I started his treatments during his sleep at night. I stayed up all night and every hour gave him his treatments while he slept. Then during the day I bought an extra mask and allowed him to hold that one while I held the other one. I also placed stickers on the mask, and gave his brother a mask so he sat with me with the mask on. I even had a mask on!
I gave him Legos! ANYTHING that would make him happy. One week, I didn't let him watch TV at all except when the treatments started...I found his favorite MUSIC videos (Wiggles) and I sang while I gave him the treatments. It was our special video. The Laurie Berkner band works as well. (BTW if you need the videos I have some extras)

I know how hard this is. I wish I had someone to help me for my boys. I spent many a night up all night and terrified. It was hard.

      Re: Children With Asthma...

I'm back from spending several hours at Kaiser Moanaloa E.R. with Antonio. Shots up the yangs yangs, xrays, medications, etc. My little grandson once again is suffering from Asthma and Pneumonia.

He's better. Fever is down. He's resting.

I would do anything to not make him suffer.

Auntie Lynn, I hope that everything is going well with you and Antonio.

I used to have severe asthma attacks all the way through childhood, so I can empathize with your little Antonio. After high school, I outgrew my asthmatic attacks, or so it seemed. Decades later, it came back with a vengeance. This was, in part, because I insisted on going to bars where I was the only non-smoker among a sea of smokers. (I wrote a couple of posts about this very early on in the “New Smoking Ban” thread on HT, but that’s another story.)

Anyway, I agree with Blueyecicle about Singulair, which I now take, along with Advair. It’s important to remember that these are long-term medication. If Antonio is having an asthma attack, these won’t help. What they will do, though, is to work on the root of the problem and PREVENT an attack. Ideally, this is what you should be aiming for. Once you get to this stage, asthma is so much more manageable. But first, you have get past this current asthmatic/pneumonia episode. Unfortunately, Hawaii’s New Year’s is just around the corner. I pray that you and Antonio can navigate around this obstacle.

Consult your doctor(s). I can only offer my personal experience. I remember my bouts of childhood asthma from years ago, which were many and quite devastating. But I did, through a circuitous route, finally overcome this. I am sure that Antonio, with your love, care, and affection, will overcome this, too.

            Blue and Honoruru! (eh, rymes)heheheh

I'll show my daughter your posts. The fever broke. The antibiotics shots and meds worked. He's still fighting his treatments...but we're use to it. The slightest hint of a cold scares me...I already said dat. It really does.

All three of our kids have asthma, though the worst of it is reliably seasonal... that is, now, early winter. Just this week we ended up buying our own nebulizer, after realizing we kept borrowing one from the hospital anyway. Albuterol and Flovent are the general, daily treatments, though we'll go through more intense treatments with steroids and the like at least once or twice per kid each year.

I sure know the torture of giving a kid medicine when he fights it with all he's got. Those little twerps are strong!

The absolute worst day of our lives, every year, is New Year's. (Here's my youngest and I ringing in 2006... what fun!) We've resolved to spend each New Year's in Hilo. There are fireworks there, too, but not as many, and not having three little lungs simultaneously and noisily struggling for oxygen would be worth a trip to the moon.

That's EXACTLY what I went through until my sons medications. It was terrible. Thankfully he is now almost completely done with the attacks!

                  Re: Children With Asthma...

My heart goes out to you with your struggling children! My 2-year old little girl so far seems OK, but with asthma running in the family, I'm worried about the cough she has all winter long, both last winter and now this one so far. Could be...

Auntie, I sooooo commend you for the sacrafice you are making. Quitting smoking I know from watching family and friends is sooo hard, but you are giving your little one life. My sister has severe asthma, and I had bronchitis and pneumonia every year growing up until I was out of the house many years, with 2 parents that smoked heavily. Every cold turned into bronchitis. I know beyond doubt that smoking played a large role in our illnesses, and my sister is affected for life. So your grandson's immune system will strengthen once his system cleans itself out of the nicotine and tar and other irritants. Not to mention the added strength to his lungs.

This may not help, but have you done the little things like remove carpet if affordable? Have you found if there are any triggers like mold or pet dander or other allergy?

I wonder why asthma is on the upswing. So scary.

alohakat, I would give my Life without blinking for my children and grandchildren. Mother's/Grandmother's Love is quite POWERFUL!

My carpet was the first thing came out when Antonio was diagnosed with Asthma. I don't miss it. In fact, it's much to easier to clean. I don't have any pets either. His parents don't have one too. Antonio spends most of his time with me M-F while his parents work. I look forward for him on weekends too. We're ALWAYS together ~ MAMA, Antonio and me. The three STOOGES!

Antonio is back to himself today. Amazing how the medications work soooo fast. I gave him one dose each of his antibiotic and PrednisoLONE. I'll be giving his treatment shortly....yep, I'll be in for another fight.

Asthma. We need clean air for the CHILDREN to BREATHE!!!!

                    PLEASE.

                      Re: Children With Asthma...

thankfully, my children outgrew their asthma, which was bad until they were in their early elementary years. In our case, much if it was exacerbated by food allergies, and while I cannot pinpoint which/what is the culprit, on the whole, the need for the machine ceased when we stopped eating white rice, corn, wheat products (to quote my husband: what get left to eat??) red hotdogs and processed food in general.

We eat brown rice, both in the rice cooker and in the form of sphaghetti noodles. Sprouted grain breads. Real butter. 100% juice (apple, orange, cranberry, grape, etc, and my kids better dilute it or Ma is gonna snap!). No soda. Candy hardly if ever. Bananas by the truckload. Fruit all the time. Veggies with each dinner. Peanut butter and preserves (no jelly and thank God, no nut allergies).

And now, the only person who needs to hit the pump is me, when the vog rolls in.

I was diagnosed with Asthma at the age of 2. I thank God that my Asthma is not severe. I am on Albuterol inhaler spray and it works for me. I have to agree with everyone on this thread that smoke makes it worse that it is the reason why I am dreading New Year's. The reason why I am dreading New Year's is that on O'ahu they pop so many fireworks and sometimes the air becomes so thick and line with smoke.
I have to say that my asthma kicks in during a severe cold like the cold that I have now. I have to tell you that I look like a pigeon gasping for air.

AUTNIE? PLease tell my husband how to quit! He just cannot do it.

Oh I do have a suggestion for the prednisolone.
It worked for Gage 2 times...LOL that was worth it. I put it in soda pop! Only 1/2 of the dose...then 10 minutes later the other half. That stuff is so nasty! Gage voomiteed every time and he lost ti so we had to start hiding it. Pop covers alot!

All my best wishes and prayers to you and yours, Auntie, Blue, PZ et al. I had terrible asthma when I was a kid. I'd end up at Straub once or twice a month and get poked with adrenaline and saline. My hanai brother had it even worse than me and ended up hospitalized for a few days when we were about 7. We've both grown out of it and I hope the same for your little ones.
