A reality check for those thinking of a sports photography career, and things to be wary of when a company offers to buy / sell your photos:

MJ, all awesome shots! The little girl with the bubbles is my favorite.

Brian, rockin' shots of Sedona also! The last one is my pick of those three.

Alas, I was on the Big Island again last weekend. You may be thinking 'Hmmm, he sure goes to the Big Island a lot'. No secret. I work there on Fridays and this Friday after work was kind of transcendant. I drove down to Honaunau and walked out on the lava at Two Step. There were a couple of local girls with their little dogs and we had a nice exchange. A couple of guys were hanging out by the parking area drinking and a woman walked by. One of them said 'Have one bee-uh (beer)', but she appeared a little hesitant and passed on by. The sunset was very mellow. It was fairly still and the temperature was perfect. I shot the first pic handheld. After I'd taken the shots and the sun had set, I realized the camera was on iso 400. D'oh! After that I drove up the hill and back toward the Manago Hotel. As I was driving along, it felt so right. It triggered something inside me that recalled, in a crystal clear way, exactly how I became connected to this place. I took a bunch of shots of the Manago off the tripod.

I didn't stay at the Manago. I stayed in a nice Ohana above a garage overlooking South Kona. You know how it is when you take a photo and there's no way to capture just how incredible the scene is? This first photo is one of those. The view from the lanai sweeps from the upper slopes of the volcano across Honaunau (the third little bay below the horizon. you almost can't see it.) to Kealakekua on the far right. The second pic is Two Step. You can see the steps just below the dive tank. They make for the easiest possible entry. I took some underwater shots, but I haven't gotten them out of the camera yet. The last pic is at Kealakekua Bay. These guys had this cool little outrigger. I'd like to have seen it sail. There was also a woman with a kid goat that I should've taken a picture of.

                        Nice shots Jim

good to experiment, I have tons of sunset shots shot handheld, and are some of my favorites. the only time I want the tripod out of sunset shots is when i want the water to look a little swirly, or i'm really playing with the light by using a high f-stop like f11, etc

                                Whoa there, cowboy.

Let's keep this thread about the gorgeous photography, okay, and leave the political debates to another thread, please?
