  • R.I.P., Auntie Genoa Keawe

Auntie Genoa passed around 4am this morning, at the ripe young age of 89.
Clearly a huge loss for all of Hawai`i nei and all of her fans.

My sympathies to her family. She indeed was a treasure for Hawaii. I was happy to have seen her perform for one more time last year. Aloha.
          I'm still here. Are you?

What a long and illustrious career she had. Had she been in ill health, LN? For some reason I'm recalling a fairly recent gig.

            RIP, Auntie Genoa...

How very, very sad. The Hawaiian music stage is noticeably dimmer without her brilliance.

Pali had mentioned this in the Pakele thread (Aunty Genoa was the first to be streamed and they did her b-day party live) but there's a nice interview and some other vids of her singing here:

What a tragic loss. What an amazing life, and a priceless legacy of music. Condolences to her huge and talented family, which includes our own InfinityPro.

I just got the text message from a friend.

You know up until recently, she DROVE herself around town to and from events? I heard sometime last week that she was admitted to Queen's and her health was failing.

My condolences to her huge ohana. I had the pleasure of meeting her on several occasions and she was just a sweet, sweet lady.

                      She'll be terribly missed.

RIP Aunty. May your music and legacy live on forever.

The websites of both daily papers have the story up, finally, though not much information.
Some of you mentioned her large family. Here's what was in the Star-Bulletin's item:
Keawe is survived by three of her 12 children, Gary Keawe-Aiko, Eli Kaeo Paalua and Eric Keawe, 40 grand children, 98 great-grand children and 81 great-great-grand children. The ohana also included her deceased children’s spouses, and two hanai daughters, Suzie Harrison and Roberta Silva.
                              (...)
Service arrangements will be made by Borthwick Mortuary. Services will be conducted by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
A date has not been set.
                              .
                              .

That's my story, and I'm sticking to it.
