Just saw the movie Top Gun: Maverick at the Ward Theater. It was shown on one of their big screens and it was lightly attended on a late Sunday afternoon.
While it is a sequel to the 1986 movie Top Gun, it wouldn't hurt to see the original first, however there are some flashback scenes and photos from the first movie in this movie. I would also recommend seeing (or remembering) the movie The Final Countdown as well for how aircraft carrier operations are sort of shown.
In this movie Captain Pete Mitchell is called in the train recent graduates of the US Navy Top Gun on a very difficult combat mission, it doesn't help matters much that one of these flyers is the son of his late Radar Intercept Officer (RIO) that died during the events of the first Top Gun movie.
