"Cane" on CBS

I tried to watch a couple of episodes of Cane, while I like the actors in the series, I am just kind of wondering what is the long term plot line for the character of Alex Vega played by Jimmy Smits who kind of makes J R Ewing of Dallas fame a nice guy.
