really? your coworker's nurse wife's bosses own cars that cost $5 mil? i thought only elite car collectors were spendy in that stratosphere. a Bentley Azure Convertible Mulliner, which Forbes.com calls one of ten most expensive cars in the world, goes for the bargain price of $376,485.

oh, you meant the doctors drove cars that cost more than your coworker's home! silly.

eric said "nurse practitioner" (NP), not just "nurse" and "general practitioner," not just "doctor." he said "earns more...after expenses." how does he know this? ah--he doesn't rely on anecdotal evidence or assumptions. he's a mortgage broker. after years in the business, he's seen documented take-home pay figures for just about every occupation in town. unlike other posters, we don't require HTers to take our assertions at face value. i'm happy to give you some properly attributed numbers.

a staff RN might make $60,000 a year, true. but let me throw some more figures at you. an RN at queen's with 13-19 months experience makes about $70,000 a year. a 32 year old RN i work with currently makes just short of $100,000 annually as a manager. this year, a kaiser NP who works less than 40 hours a week makes $102,731. she lives in an area where homes cost about $650,000 versus the easy million they are on oahu. and then, of course, there are certified nurse anesthetists. CRNAs with less than five years experience make about $160,000 according to a very recent survey by locumtenens.com. tonight, i checked with the HR director at my work and it's not unusual for us to pay a CRNA $90 an hour--$187,200 a year.

what do general practitioners (GPs) make? about as much as a CRNA. but the GP will need to get liability insurance before she can even bring a patient through the door. i couldn't find quotes on annual cost for GPs' malpractice insurance, but the advertiser link eric provided earlier said that an OB-GYN was quoted $60,000 and that was in 2005. an orthopedic surgeon told PBN in 2001 that he received quotes from $42,000 to $129,000. given the ortho surgeon's story, i'd say it's safe to assume a fifth of the GP's salary could go to malpractice insurance alone.

but wait! malpractice insurance isn't the only overhead cost a GP would have to pay. most physicians are not employed by hospitals but are self-employed. therefore, a GP will likely pay an office lease, buy her own health insurance and spent $$ on employee expenses (salaries, health insurance, workers' comp insurance). the list of overhead costs goes on, and there goes a significant chunk of that six figure income.

nurses of all kinds, however, don't have that kind of overhead, since the organizations they work for provide health insurance, workers comp, etc. as i pointed out before, most nurses don't even need to buy liability insurance bcs their employer's insurance covers them.

here endeth the lesson on why, generally speaking, the average NP takes home more money than the average GP.

i'm still thinking none of them are driving $500 million dollar cars, tho. *smirk*

i never said be PC. in fact, i've already said that the class action lawsuit is overkill, regardless of the fact that i'm glad my people didn't just let the comment slide.

i enjoy on-the-edge humor. i count family guy, american dad, and the aforementioned archie bunker amongst my favorite shows and guess what? there's tons of offensive humor to go around. the difference? there's a point to be made, which usually is that no matter how weird an ethnic group might be or how stinky their food is, they're still people, and people, generally, are good and kind and wonderful. good ethnic humor points out the similarities that transcend the differences.

a few nights ago, steve on american dad lamented that his wife's adoptive parents were chinese, in all their stereotypic glory, down keeping a bunch of fireworks stashed, to hanging ducks in the window, to washing used paper towels so they could be reused. in disgust, he went in search of francine's biological parents, who turned out to have given her up as an infant bcs she inconvenienced their vacation. the eppy ended with steve having revelations that just cause francine's adoptive parents are objectionable to him in certain ways, he'd much prefer them over her biological parents as in-laws.

the line that teri hatcher spat out was nuanced in its offensiveness. first of all, she's saying it as an insult to an american physician who is white, with the implication that because he's suggesting she might be starting menopause, he's an inferior MD who couldn't have been able to grad from an american med school. secondly, taking a larger view, this is a largely popular first-world television show taking a shot at a third world nation's ability to educate its physicians. remember now, that for a time, the US colonized the PI, so for PI nationals, this is pulling off a scab. to reduce it to being offensive only to "PI laws, government, and standards of practice" versus its people is flat out ignorant. people's identities are closely tied with their nation, government and educational standards. those are all things which are a matter of national pride, and no nationality or ethnicity (there's a difference b/w the two) would take any summarily dismissive criticism as the one made on DH laying down. how would our nation react if word got out that a wildly popular german show said something like, "german cars are too good for the US. not only are they bad at engineering cars--they're bad at engineering highways! ha!ha!ha!" can we say american boycott of all things german--cars, chocolate cake, and beer?? we wouldn't care if the character who said it was largely viewed as an oaf who says nothing but the wrong things. i bet some fringe group would even demand a complete trade embargo.

specifically about education in the PI: as mike pointed out, it's dumb for any american to assume that the average filipino isn't as well educated as s/he is. first of all, many filipinos do not speak the national language at home, so they learn that at school. but they also learn english. most filipinos from the PI of a certain age and education level are at the very least, bilingual if not trilingual, as well as fluent in english. how many of you can speak more than english fluently?

i, too, can see andy and frank using the same line. the thing is, andy, who is not only filipino himself but a far more artful comedian, would actually be funny. frank? he can't even fill a room based on his own merit. that's why, besides private parties, you almost always see him paired up with another comedian or another performer. compared to rex, andy, and paul--frank's just a joke.

          Hi Stinky Okole You,

This was alot of work for nothing. Your conclusion above is not only false but it does not even follow from your pathetic attempt at an arguement. You forgot to list what doctors earn. You cannot make a comparison of MD and Nurse pay without listing doctor pay. I'm not looking it up cuz I know what the answer is and it is obvious. Most are in the 200000 to 500000 ranges for mid-career M.Ds.

Then the only M.D.s you select for malpractice insurance examples are the obstetricians and orthopedists, the guys with the outrageous rates. Most M.Ds don't have the same level of problem. Or are all Filipino trained Doctors who come to the U.S. obstetricians or orthopedic surgeons? I doubt it.

I would agree that the difference between what an M.D. makes and what a nurse makes is much closer in Hawaii, thanks to socialized medicine but Doctors STILL earn more, even after costs. If not, there would be no more Doctors in Hawaii. While there is a shortage, especially in some specialties, they haven't all left,......yet.

Didn't you go to Iolani? Isn't that my memory. Cuz this public school grad gives your argumentative essay a D.

            $500 million dollar cars?

Thanks for the lesson. I don't doubt what you know on the subject. I was repeating what my former coworker said. But, why do NPs here live in rentals or modest homes... why don't they buy multi-million dollar homes like all the doctors do? And drive '$500 million dollar cars'?

Bahahahhahaha. You actually think General Practitioners in Hawaii make that much?! You're out of your coconut tree, brah. Too bad you're wrong though. There was an article in one of the dailies -- I'll let you practice you Googling skills again -- earlier this year about the severe shortage of GPs (not so much the specialists; you got it backwards) on the Big Island as many have closed shop. Guess why.
Thanks for the laugh though. I needed that.

it's apparent i know much more about the subject than you do.

most of the nurses i work with are regular RNs, not even NPs, and they live on halekoa drive in multimillion dollar homes themselves, are spending big bucks adding another story to their home, and drive two luxury cars of mid-range (they're not just driving the lowest range Lexus IS--they've got the benz with the AMG engine.

the $500 million might be my typo, but at least it's a typo. you're the one who makes the outlandishly stupid assertion that MDs can afford $5 million dollar cars. i'm don't even think there there are more than five cars worth $500,000 on this island.

and if all the nurses you know live in rentals or modest homes, it's not bcs they're making small potatoes. there are lots of factors that people use to decide where they live. not everyone who makes six figs has a desire to live in kahala.

for all your disparagement of nurses, i'd guess you're jealous of your coworker's wife's $60,000 salary, which is easily going to go up with every year. they are union, after all.

As I said before, I was relating what my former coworker said about his nurse wife and physician bosses. Sorry about my typo about MDs owning $5 million dollar cars. I was only teasing you about your typo... didn't you see my smilie? But, I didn't call you 'stupid' for it.

I'm not disparaging nurses... where did you get that idea? I work among them in my building, and they are the most wonderful people... full of love and *humor*. Why would you think I'd be jealous of them? I could not do their job in a million years. I'm glad to hear you tell me that they earn more than $60,000. When my coworker told me what his wife earned, I almost told him she was way underpaid, but he was so proud of her that I didn't.

Anyway, thanks for letting me express my opinion and thoughts. And thank you for not telling me to lick your ass... my aged eyes couldn't believe it was coming from you. Until I read that, I used to envision you as beautiful and intelligent.

for the record, i never asked any HTer in particular to lick my dirty ass. that was directed at "anyone who wants to make blanket statements about the inferiority of physician training in the PI versus in the US, or about the inferiority of filipino physicians who learned their trade in the US and now practice as MDs in the US." kamuelakea obviously counts himself in that camp and thinks flip MDs are inferior. additionally, it seems to me he's rather obsessed with opportunity to ingest feces. i make one remark, and it informs a good number of his posts thereafter. it's no wonder--crap's what often comes out of his mouth anyway.

Point taken. I apologize for being insensitive in my comments.

good on you cyn! i actually watched that episode and it did irritate me at the time - then i got an email about it from a filipina friend of mine and was glad to hear that someone was irked enough to do something about it.

i've been to the philippines (i loved it!) and my cosmetic surgeon there was top notch (for the record, my doc was trained in the u.s. but practices in manila - specialising in 'medical tourism' http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medical_tourism) he makes a very good living out of operating on foreigners (many americans) who can't afford (or are unwilling) to pay the high price for elective surgeries here in the u.s. my procedure would have cost more than twice what i paid in p.i. and it was an absolutely positive experience for me and i'm looking forward to having more work done there if (when) i need it in the future.

the other side of that assumption that md's who got their degrees in the philippines are inferior is that docs trained in america must be superior and i just don't agree with that. there are good and bad everywhere. it's like that joke, "what do you call the guy who graduates last in his class at medical school? ... doctor!"

so where you got your medical degree is irrelevant to me (although i know it's all important in this liability obsessed culture) - and it must be irrelevant to the hundreds of thousands of people who travel to the philippines, singapore, india and thailand (remember don ho's attempt at radical heart surgery that was unavailable in the u.s?) to have the surgery they want or need. all we care about is that you do it right!

anyway i digress! back on topic, you have my support and you can guarantee that if the cultural insensitivity was against MY people - i would be doing the HAKA!

Hmmmm, what would "Six figures" or at least 100K qualify you for? Maybe you should get out the yellow pages and try your best to find an honest Mortgage Broker. If they are honest, they should tell you that 3 to 4 times your annual income is a good rule of thumb as long as you don't have any other significant car payments, alimony etc.

So what would 400K or even 500K get you in Honolulu today?

This is a 35 year old whopping 600 square foot beauty on barely 2000 sq feet of land which just had a layer of paint thrown on to keep the walls standing.

                                All yours for just 485,000.

                                Lets summarize ericncyn;

                                1) Most homes on Halekoa Drive are UNDER 1 million, maybe 1 or 2 are "multimillion)
                                2) Your rich nurses could only get a loan for 300K to 500K if they really wanted to stretch.
                                3) They could only purchase a home on Halekoa if they;

                                a) Got a suicide loan from a Mortgage Borker (Neg am, no interest, ARM)
                                b) Happened to save an extra 500K in change for a down payment
                                c) Married a rich MD who could actually buy the house for them.
                                d) Work 2 jobs while abandoning their children at grandma's house or with strangers at daycare.

                                You still dont add up.
