To control city taxes, rein in spending
Why must property assessment values and taxes be higher year after year? The reason is that the city is spending more and getting into deeper debt year after year, and it is property tax revenue that pays those bills.

It is really very simple; higher property values yield more tax revenue and a higher credit rating for the city and county.

Since it is possible for the city to foreclose on property that is behind on tax payments, it has a legal right to the tax proceeds, paid or unpaid. Creditors love to know that the loans they have made can be repaid. Remember, overspending or debt issued as bonds is simply increased future property taxes by another name.

The critical point for property owners to remember is that assessments do not make taxes high; city spending makes taxes high.

Ask your City Council representative to control city spending, and property taxes will not have to rise.

Don't complain if you keep voting for them
Everyone is loudly protesting the excessive increase in property tax. Why? Why blame our elected officials? You put them there, they continue on a regular basis to financially rape you, and you go right back and re-elect them, over and over again.

The major political parties are, much like labor unions, special-interest groups. They have their own agendas, which are not in the best interest of the majority, but of some special-interest sector of our citizenry.

Want to make a change? Vote for the person, not the party. You have been misled by your party. You have been lied to by your party. You have been financially raped by your party. If you continue to do the same thing, you're going to get the same results. Is that ignorance or what?

Neighborhood Board Member to Challenge Romy Cachola For City Council Seat

Violent crime, prostitution, the homeless and the rail transit issue are just some of the reasons Lynn Vasquez-Dela Cerna, a vocal member of the Kalihi/Palama Neighborhood Board, is challenging Romy Cachola for City Council District 7.

Affectionately known as “Aunty Lynn,” 52, the mother of three says many in her community are angry lawmakers are not doing more to improve their neighborhoods. The self-described “local girl” says she is saddened by the crippling effect illegal drugs, particularly crystal meth or “ice” has had on families and young people.

One of the most visible projects is the Weed and Seed “Adopt a block” program,” says Aunty Lynn. “We need to get the whole community involved” she said.

Aunty Lynn says publicity of the state’s ice problem, particularly in the urban core and their surrounding areas are a good start. But she points to drug-related crime that often brings a negative spotlight to her home in Mayor Wright’s housing as more than “just another issue.”

“You don’t really know what it’s like unless you see it every day,” says Aunty Lynn. “I lost a friend to ice, so for me, the issue really hits home.”

Aunty Lynn says many addicts camouflage themselves by trying to blend in with the homeless in the community. That is why she has dedicated the last few years reaching out to the homeless as a volunteer coordinator for “The Kaukau Wagon” in Chinatown, and co-founded “The Slippah Project,” an outreach program that stretches all the way to the beaches of Waianae.

Vasquez-Dela Cerna says she realized she needed to run against Romy Cachola after the heavily publicized incident in which Cachola made his support for Rail Transit hinge on the re-routing of the train through the Salt Lake community.

“Here we have all these problems that are on the backburner because of this important traffic issue that need to be addressed.” Says Aunty Lynn. “Instead, Honolulu Hale is held hostage, because he wants to include something that people in Salt Lake don’t even want.”

Aunty Lynn pointed out that when U.S. Secretary of Transportation Norman Mineta came to Honolulu to testify on rail transit, Cachola actually criticized the project because of the unwanted noise steel-on-steel rail would bring to the Salt Lake community.

“So it was hypocritical of him to then go against the desires of the residents, and force the council to include Salt Lake in the train’s route,” Aunty Lynn says. “I support the principle of mass transit, but if I am elected, I’ll work with the Council to end this wasteful spending and focus on real priorities.”

“So many people have approached me to say, “Aunty Lynn, please run. This is for them.”
