What is funny is that such a mindset of posters thinks any dribble emanating from their stale, rundown intellects has any value whatsoever to those Kauaians who are literally laying their lives on the line over this HI Superferry issue on Kauai.
The feeling's mutual on Kaua'ians. If I die tomorrow without having seen the so-called Garden Isle, I have no regret. Nothing's special about it anyway.

And thanks for the correction. My evil twin would rather not have the Coast Guards shoot the pro-Superferry residents on Kaua'i.

Yeah, sure,, paid back, with interests too ...aren't we lucky !

Some Hawaii community could have gotten a much needed new middle and high school for $40mln where the return would have been far greater than $40 mln given toward the welfare of HSF, Inc. HSF,Inc at less interest than college student loans.

When Hurricane Iniki ravaged Kauai people there were clamoring for tarps, plywood and generators. The first serious aid came via an Army ship four days after the storm. The commander of that ship said it was delayed by none other than Mayor Yukimura. An eariler flight of National Guard helicopters was turned back by the same mayor, by the way. I got that directly from the commander of that flight of helos.

Hundreds of tourists tried desperately to get flights off the island.

The Superferry could easily provide tons of relief supplies in a matter of hours. Not days. And when you have people without necessary basics each day counts.

The day might come when these people will realize their irrational panic once again has left them with limited options when the ---- hits the fan.

Just out of mild curiosity, is Kauai distributing more welfare funds then they are getting in taxes? In other words, is the "Kauai Lifestyle" that they are working so hard to protect being paid for by welfare?

Isn't that the same with the outer islands presuming Oahuians only want to come over for the Opihi, the fish, and to bring their drugs over?

So you're bitter that the money is supposed to get paid back? The money is supposed to be an investment, hoping the HSF would help spur the economy whether it be lowered costs between the islands or increased local business between the islands. Helping the community doesn't always mean throwing money at schools. Going off on a tangent, but the schools need reform in structure, just simply throwing more money at it isn't the solution.

I'm disappointed in Ian Lind's blog yesterday, where he wrote:
The crowd that gathered on Kauai last night for Gov. Lingle’s appearance, estimated at “more than 1,100″ by the Adveriser, comprised 1.7 percent of the island’s population of just about 63,000. That’s a huge showing of concern and opposition.
What ticks me off is that Ian implies that every single person in the audience was anti-SuperFerry, when in fact that is far from the truth. There were numerous times when various speakers comments from the podium were greeted with much loud applause, which the antis tried to drown out with boos. I'd say the audience seemed to be split about 50-50.
We all know Ian is anti-SF, but he needs to be fair and pono or risk losing his credibility.
And video and written reports show that the antis were verbally -- and aggressively -- being rude and obscene to the pro-SF Kauai residents. Another black eye for the Garden Isle.
                  .
                  .

That's my story, and I'm sticking to it.

And that's the whole point. Right now, the residents of the Neighbor Islands only have the voices of their elected representatives to speak for them. And what's even more surprising is that Neighbor Island legislators hold key positions on many of the legislative committees and the leadership of both houses of the Legislature, and yet they have not been able to get much legislation passed to deal with the Neighbor Islands' concerns. Why is that? For instance, why is there only one major hospital on Maui for about 140,000 people plus all the tourists who visit every day? You're talking about life and death situations there. It's well known that for years, Maui Memorial Medical Center was the "cash cow" of the entire State hospital system and the State was siphoning off "profits" to help keep afloat community hospitals on Oahu and the other islands.

If your "home rule" Governor really means what she said in her campaign promises, then having an initiative/referendum process should help Neighbor Island folks have more of their needs at least be made known to the entire State. All the Neighbor Islands have serious infrastructure issues that need to be addressed if the State continues to grow.

It's no longer the case that State laws being passed can continue to be Oahu-centric, because more and more people are moving to the Neighbor Islands to escape the crowded conditions on Oahu. It may take awhile, but at some point, the populations of the Neighbor Islands will come close to matching the population of Oahu, at the rate things are going. But without proper planning and beefing up the infrastructure of each island and limiting (but not stopping) development, all the Neighbor Islands are at risk of becoming Oahu. Is that what people want?

When Hurricane Ewa hit Kauai back in 82' I was working for the Gas Company. We tried to send bottled water (filled them ourselves in empty food grade containers) and other food stuff along with donated clothing. YB wouldn't send it because of the bottled water issue not being certified clean (heck we were filling jugs from the tap we drink ourselves).

Our boss Harold Hashiro chartered the Navetek to make two runs from Oahu to Kauai to bring in much needed supplies without the help of YB.

Without another way of transporting goods, we wouldn't have been able to send items in bulk (and in need) in a timely manner. Kauai needs to understand as well that when the next big hurricane hits, they will need heavy equipment as they needed the last two times, the Army Corp of Engineers and many of Oahu's heavy equipment operators sent their vehicles to Kauai via YB. But it took a while for it to happen. The SF will get it there faster.

Aloha everyone. This is my first entry into a HawaiiThreads converstion although I have been following this particular conversation since I linked to this site earlier this week while doing a search on the Hawaii Superferry.

I was born in Hawaii and our family moved to Kauai in the 70's when I was still in primary school. I am very much opposed to Superferry operations in between the islands but of course especially to, from or around Kauai.

Although I was not able to participate in the protest that resulted in abortion of the Superferry landing in Nawiliwili Harbor in August, I know and support many of those who did participate. This past Thursday I went to the community gathering at the County Building's courtyard followed by walking to the Governor's meeting at the Convention Hall where parking space represented a function attracting an above capacity crowd, including law enforcement personnel and vehicles and the two tour buses used to transport the imported Oahu Superferry constituency some of whom, the next day, occupied half the seats in our new judicial building's small courtroom of the new judge Randall Valenciano, a lawyer/politician appointed judge.

I read a previous message here that suggested there was 50-50 split pro and con at the latter meeting. Being that that was a distant observation I won't say that it is a false observation, though it remains very inaccurate of reality. It seems to be a sincere expression which correlates with that observer's previously expressed desires as regards Superferry serving Kauai and Maui to Oahu to appease Honolulu County residents' appetite for what little remains of Hawaii not fully Americanized to the point of barely palatable blandness.

While officially there was "No standing, No posters in front of the line of the last row of seats", there were camera tripods, cameramen, photographers in every nook and cranny behind the curtains in back of the panel and in the front side aisles. Standing attendees, not counting enforcement-attired men, totalled about half the number of Superferry employees/family members who were flown to Kauai, bused to the Center to occupy the seats of their choice, compliments Kauai taxpayers and their 1000 seat convention center.

Beginning shortly after the beginning of the 3 1/2 hour event, many dozens of people opposed to the ferry were being denied entrance to the filled to capacity seating area monitored by Kauai Police accompanied by DLNR enforcement officers. It was well beyond obvious that by far most of the people in immediate attendence not only opposed Governor Lingle's position on the Superferry issue, but adamantly opposed her threats to impose Superferries on us.

Such opposition was most clearly discernable when speakers' testimonies and inquiries, addressing the Governor at her podium and occassionally addressing members of the seated panel, empowered the vast majority of the audience to rise from their seats to applaud and cheer speakers who effectively related shared, abundant commonly held community values insulted by a shared sense of just how indecent or worse this whole Governor Lingle administration of Kauai's "best interests" has been regarding naval sonar wartime exercises, and tour helicopters, and roads, and the missile range land, sea, air base weapons, fuel and missile storage facility, and state beaches, parks, shore management, maintenance, and safety, then adding Superferries!

For those of us on Kauai who have made it through and recovered from more hurricanes than we'd like to think about without, thank you very much, the help of people on other islands, especially Oahu, telling us how, when and what we should do,,,, well, when the Governor invited us to come hear her mandates, open wide, swallow her medicine, smile and say thank you for your interest in our welfare, there was a surreal atmoshere being generated.

Perhaps the Superferries are the straw meant to break the camel's back. Maybe the camel's back fractured and the spirit chose to become a lion instead of reside in a broken down pack animal.

What is about the Superferry that you are opposed to? Is it because you don't like boats? You don't like their fare structure? Does it make too much noise when it operates?

After all of that, are you going to state your reason for opposition to the Superferry, aside from supporting the protestors or are you just a follower?

                              And, your remark here:

demonstrates that you lack the capacity to be grateful, which IMHO should burden your soul more than the Superferry.

I agree to virtually every stated point in three hours of expressed nonstop oppositon to the Superferry . It's enough to write a book about, and no doubt volumes of Enviromental Assessment papers and many more volumes of Enviromental Impact Study documents should it come to that.

There is absolutely zilch that can be good for Kauai resulting from Superferry commercial opertions to, from or around Kauai when all of the negative factors regarding Superferry operations in Kauai waters or harbors are taken into account.
