Working at a store on Black Friday can be hazardous, according to the story at this link from Associated Press:

Wal-Mart worker dies after shoppers knock him down

"A worker died after being trampled by a throng of unruly shoppers when a suburban New York Wal-Mart opened for the holiday sales rush Friday, authorities said. At least three other people were injured.
"Wal-Mart Stores Inc., in Bentonville, Ark., would not confirm the reports of a stampede but said a "medical emergency" had caused the company to close the store, which is in Valley Stream on Long Island.
"Nassau County police said the 34-year-old worker was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead at about 6 a.m., an hour after the store opened. The cause of death was not immediately known.
"A police statement said shortly after 5 a.m., a throng of shoppers "physically broke down the doors, knocking (the worker) to the ground." Police also said a 28-year-old pregnant woman was taken to a hospital for observation and three other shoppers suffered minor injuries and were also taken to hospitals."

    .

That's my story, and I'm sticking to it.

which is in Valley Stream on Long Island.
Wow, I used to live nearby -- I'd go to the malls often. Home to some of the most aggressive shoppers I've ever seen!

Sad to be informed of such a tragedy.

A few years ago my sister and I ventured out to WalMart on Black Friday at about 10 a.m. Needless to say, everything we had wanted was already sold out. After picking up items on our regular shopping list, I noticed a line of 10-deep at the return counter. The morning vultures were returning items that they 'over purchased.' In the end, we were able to score everything we had wanted.

Here's a video of WalMart this morning.

              Re: Black Friday 2008

it doesn't only happen at budget retailers. i worked in high end retail for many years and the customers were terrible even resorting to grabbing things right out of the hands of other shoppers.

just like they do when a storm is approaching (here, in the islands), they allow only a number of people into the store at a time. security and or the police should help with the crowds. that's how we handled the situation. albeit there weren't hundreds of people waiting to get in.

Black Friday tramplings, scrambling for Wii's,
Cuz children just want to see gifts under trees.
