On Akaka's opening remarks: Not sure about the wisdom of opening on the age issue, or pointing out why the debate host (AARP) is a good thing for him. Liked his articulation of the importance of dialogue rather than confrontation, and the overstated significance of floor debates. He really got on a role in summarizing his position on Bush, Iraq, and the like. He seemed a bit unsteady, but still comfortable.
Strategy-wise, I think Akaka was tackling head on what is perceived to be his weakest point or the point that bears the brunt of Case's, erm, well, case against him. Rather than hide from the issue or dance around it, Akaka brought it up front and tried to deal with it a bit humorously. and, honestly, if age is an issue, he can't get much better than AARP to raise the issue in front of.
