  • New Films - Fall 2006

There are a couple of films that I can't wait to see that are appearing on the silver screen soon or are already out:

    The Black Dahlia
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Begining
    The Wicker Man (remake obviously)
"Hey fool, we gots yo leada!"
"But I can't even read good."
"Whatever that means, you ____ peasant."
"That (stuff) is the MOST BALLER THING EVAAA!!!!"

The Black Dahlia is probably the only one of those three that I'm curious about. My wife and I have been on a bit of a "neo noir" kick lately. Not enough Tomato reviews to get a sense for how it's being received, and Brian De Palma has a mixed track record. It's based a true story that has seen many tellings, and certainly worthy of a serious big screen attempt.

The other two are more recycled content.

I've seen commercials for The Wicker Man, but I think I've had my fill of Nick Cage as a mopey sad sack. The only thing the remake is inspiring is a desire to check out the 1973 original, which has an interesting following. The music was apparently a big part of the 1973 original's appeal... but I don't get that sense from the 2006 version.

As for the Texas Chainsaw Massacre "prequel"? (Trailer here.) Looks like they're going to go high gloss and push for "serious scary," even though its inspiration is a low-budget horror classic. Though I guess this one is actually linked to the 2003 remake? I guess enough people liked that retelling to finance another one.

What other flicks are folks looking forward to in the next couple of months? Stranger than Fiction is high on my list. Will Ferrell and Emma Thompson in a meta movie? I'm so there. My kids, meanwhile, probably look most forward to Happy Feet!
    • All The King's Men: Another remake! Sean Penn, Jude Law, Kate Winslet. Sept. 22.
    • The Departed: Martin Scorsese directs Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Jack Nicholson, Martin Sheen, Alec Baldwin... Oct. 6.
    • Marie Antoinette: Sofia Coppola (of Lost in Translation) directs Kirsten Dunst. Oct. 20.
    • Stranger than Fiction: Will Ferrell, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Dustin Hoffman, Emma Thompson. Nov. 10.
    • Happy Feet: Animated. Voices of Robin Williams, Hugh Jackman, Elijah Wood, Nicole Kidman. Nov. 17.

The movie that fits this topic and for me not to reference IMDb or the iTunes Movie preview site would be Casino Royale, which opens some time in November.

Hollywoodland looks interesting, maybe a double feature with that and the Black Dahlia.

I kind of want to see The Departed because I liked the original, Infernal Affairs, but then again, maybe I shouldnt watch it.
I'd like to see Last Kiss because I liked Scrubs and Garden State but the trailer looks meh.
DOA looks interesting only because its done by Cory Yuen, but then again its a movie based on a video game.
        The Fountain might be interesting.
        Hmm.. another Rocky movie?
Other then that, I dont see many I like.

Just saw this trailer "The Science of Sleep". I like Michael Gondry, he did Eternal Sunshine on the Spotless Mind and various music videos and shorts.

I'm excited to see The Departed. Mainly because I'm a big fan of Scorsese and Damon. Leo? Not so much.

But the movie that should excite everyone and I've already heard some pre-Oscar buzz about it is.... Jackass 2!!!

I know a number of people who want to go see it just to see Nick Cage get burned at the end. That guy gives Keanu Reeves a run for his money at wooden acting.

I am so looking forward to the next few months movie wise. Summer was crap, but then I think they tailor to the "out of school" crowd. Looking forward to "Deja Vu" with Russell Crowe, "The Good German" with Cate Blanchett and George Clooney, "Flags of our Fathers" from Clint Eastwood, "Little Children" with Kate Winslet and so many more...

I just wish we got more foreign films here... I wonder if Almodovars new film will come here. Probably at the Duke theatre at least..

I saw "The Last King of Scotland" http://www2.foxsearchlight.com/thelastkingofscotland/ with Forest Whitaker last night as Idi Amin. Great great movie. I must see.

Also saw "One night with the King" http://www.8x.com/onenight/. Well acted and biblical.
For more of an understanding, read the book of Esther in the Bible and "Hadassah: One night with the King" which is what the movie is based off of.

I will recommend adding these two movies to your must see movies.

I just saw this and agree that it was a great movie. Forest Whitaker should win an Oscar, imo.

I'm looking forward to seeing "Flags of our Fathers".

Also, I'm taking a class in Greek History and am really into the "Battle of Thermopylae", where 300 Spartans defended a narrow pass against a Persian army of millions. They're making a movie of it based off of the book "Gates of Fire" by Steven Pressfield (great book, btw) and "300", a graphic comic by Frank Miller. It's being done completely in CGI and looks pretty badass. This is a link to a trailer for the movie, if anyone's interested: 300 trailer
