Default Have you met someone famous?

In an organization I was part of, we actually had to escort Pure Heart (the musical group) to the stage in Waikiki (forgot when was that). The next weekend, we all got autographed pictures of them, and some other goodies.

In the same organization, I also met Mufi Hanneman (sp?) and Major Harris.

BTW, this organization is part of HPD, that let high school teens do security (after training of course), so we were just doing our job
How'd I get so white and nerdy?

In 1983, just before I discharged from the Air Force, I got to meet President Reagan at Vandenberg AFB. I was with Missles and he came to see the operation at the base. He shook hands with many of us who went down to the flight line to see him.

I also got to meet Lucille Ball, flying from New York to LA in 1981 on American Airlines.

    Well, let's see ....

Presidents? Eisenhower and Carter. (Although when I shook Eisenhower's hand, it was before he was President. Carter was currently in office, though, came to thank those of us who were working at the UN for our "contributions".)

Stars ... Judy Garland, Maria Callas, Marlene Dietrich, Twiggy ...

Artists ... list too long to mention, almost all major American artists since 1960.

Composers ... Virgil Thomson, Peter Maxwell Davies, Leonard Bernstein.

Local musicians ... Genoa Keawe, Willie K ... errr, that list is pretty long too, so let's not go on.

I was asked yesterday how I'd describe myself in one sentence and replied "A dirty old man who has had a more interesting life than he probably
    deserved."

Famous, huh? Well, the only famous person I met was David HassleHopAndSkip, of Knight Rider, Baywatch and recently got arrested fame, back when I was a wee lad. Beyond that, no one really. Although when I trained in karate, I got to meet some pretty well known sensei's here. But outside of that circle, it's no big whoop.

p.s. Although I know all the three young men who used to be Pure Heart, I don't think any of them would consider themselves "famous".

Wellll, maybe Jake. (Just teasing, Jake.)

    Let's see...

Waited on Roger Ebert. He sure likes anime. I guess he comes pretty much every year for the film festival.

Kealii Reichel and the Makaha Sons both did in-store appearances at Tower when I worked there. Kealii is very, very short. As is Charo, who is quite the diva.

The most interesting one is definitely director Paul Thomas Anderson and his girlfriend, Fiona Apple. Fiona is scary skinny. She looked sad.

Hey, waited on Shawn Ching from Channel 4, too. He was shopping in the housewares department. With a dude.

edited to add: Hey! Forgot one! I also helped Kim Gennaula with her wedding registry.

Tom Selleck...he was filming at Kewalo Basin...but only my kids took pictures with him...so I have no proof! And I only have the autographed golf balls from Michelle Wie...again I should have taken pictures with her! My kids always told me...get the picture!

I took a picture with Jack Lord way back when he co-hosted a telethon at Iolani Palace Bandstand with Doug Mossman (I think that was his name, or it might've been Sterling Mossman -- those names stick out for some reason). I also took a picture with Richard Boone (old western star). Didn't actually meet Tom Selleck but watched him work while my son was an extra on the set of Magnum PI. Met Keali'i Reichel and had him sign my CD covers. I'll update if I remember anymore ... I have an excuse, I'm old .. heh

It's pretty wild that people consider local political figures (and more startlingly so) local TeeVee reporters "famous." I think "notorious" would be a better term. I've met all these people and (I'd hate to burst your bubble) but they're regular people just like you and me, except they happen to appear on TeeVee or in the rags a bit more often than the rest of us. Many are jerks (they'll remain nameless) who ride the idea that they're on TeeVee all the time so they're "important." Important is that dude who cleans the toilet at your office, or the bus driver who gets you where you need to go safely, or the dude who delivers your mail everyday, or the person behind the bar who remembers what you drink. That's the real thing. Not some smokescreen "I'm cool because I've been on TeeVee." I will admit that I've met some "famous" people are totally cool and are "regular" people. But they, too will remain nameless.

These people I've named are famous because people can associate them with whatever it is they're famous for (whether we like them or not). I don't think anyone thinks of them as being "important" in their lives, I certainly don't, so no bubbles are bursted here. However, if a bartender remembers which type of drink I normally ordered, I'd take that as a clue that I'm spending way too much time at the bar and not with the people who are important to me - my ohana.

Leimamo - good points. I suppose I've seen so much fawning over "famous" people in my time, I linked the two together, without thinking through the semantics. (And I'll take the bartender commentary under advisement - amusing nonetheless)

On a side note, I was at a coffee joint this morning reading the papers and a TeeVee anchor was at a table next to mine. A person came along and asked for her autograph. I kinda tripped out on that. The anchor was way cool, though. Almost seemed well-versed in it.

Ummm, let me think, my girlfriend had her foot stepped on by Bill Walton of the Celtics, does that count, I was there with her. My mother dated Al Harrington's brother, he is related to someone famous. OK wait, yes I have, Akebono, Musashimaru, and Konishiki! I met them all here in Tokyo. I helped Akebono buy his first computer. I helped Konishiki learn how to use his first computer. Recently I posted a web site for Musashimaru for his upcoming retirement party!

I also saw Jason Yotzuda (the guy who does the traffic reports for KHON2 @ 5pm) at Software etc Pearlridge a few months ago.

An employee realized that it was him, and just praised him on how different he looks on TV. None of the store customers didn't even know him, until the employee mentioned that he was doing the traffic reports.

Let's see, I met Tom Selleck when they were filming on Lunalilo Home Rd. and I got his autograph. Nice guy. I met Jim Nabors(who hasn't?) at some home show at Blaisdell, Dolly Parton at the Kona Village, Ernest Borgnine at another hotel on the Big Island. All of these encounters happened ukubillion years ago. Last year my Buddhist group was fortunate to have a private audience with His Holiness the Dalai Lama in India, and 'Kundun' stood next to me with his arm around my shoulder during the group photo shoot. It was indescribable being in his presence.

Oh yeah, and Allegra Goodman(the novelist) and Keoki Kerr were in my HS class.

"would the Dalai Lama consider himself "famous"?"

I think he'd have to admit that he is.

Never met him, but did once walk in his footsteps minutes after he had passed. I was up in the Himalayan foothills when a gentleman politely asked me if I would wait for a few minutes because His Holiness the Dalai Lama was about to use that path. I waited, watched him pass, and was quite honored to then follow after him.

One year the US Figure Skating National Champioships were held here in Boston. My oldest daughter (who figure skates) was lucky to be selected to hold the medals and flowers that were presented to the winners. Back stage we met Michelle Kwan and Sara Hughes. My daughter also met some of the other male figure skaters. We also met several pair skaters who medaled and got to have our photos taken with them on the ice. We've also met Nancy Kerrigan. Years before I took my daughters to Boston to watch the Champions On Ice show. We were leaving the side parking lot and Tara Lipinski crossed right in front of our van. Her mom was right behind her pulling her skating bag. I rolled the window down and hollered hello and waved to Tara! She hollered hello and waved right back!

Met? we weren't introduced, but something very cool did happen at the San Jose, California airport in the early eighties. It was around one PM on a weekday, and another Navy wife and I were picking up our hubbies that had been at some aviation school. We were in a part of the airport that was just about dead at the time. As Patricia and I walked together slowly, talking a bit, I recognized Ringo Starr and his wife, Barbara Bach! They were alone, no entourage or security, and what freaked me out the most was that they were dressed exactly like they had been just days previous, on the Phil Donahue show.

I couldn't believe they didn't seem to care if they were recognized or not, but no one seemed to notice them, and here they came from the opposite direction, not five feet away from our path. I grew up with Beatles music, it was a big deal, but I would not let myself act like some goofy fan, yet had to let them know I recognized them. (grin) So, thinking quickly, I said, lowkey and quietly, as they got right beside us..."the Phil Donahue show was great!"Patricia thought I was crazy, but in maybe three seconds, we heard them both, in unison, say "yeah." I then quickly told Patricia what the deal was, and she and I both turned around so she could maybe see that I wasn't joking, and recognize them.

Thumbs up Re: Have you meet someone famous?

    Someone famous, huh?

    Well, not to long ago,
My hubby & I met up
    with Keali'i Reichel at
    the little eatery place
    close to where we live.
    We also went to his
    concert at a special event.
My hubby knows Keali'i's good friend.
Lance Orillo also knows my hubby, we ran into
    him, one day, to.
    Jim Hubbard & his band,
    Played in our wedding.
He is a really good friend with
    my hubby. Infact,
They are all really good people.
Not trying to brag or anything.

    Aloha & Take Care.
    Aches & Pains

Last weekend I ran into this guy who was on a couple of James Bond movies in the 1970s. He tried to sell me an autographed picture but I passed. He did let me take his pic with my digital camera.
