  • Support ending for Windows XP SP1

    Source

Microsoft will end support for Windows XP Service Pack 1 and SP1a on Tuesday, leaving people no option but to upgrade to Service Pack 2 if they wish to continue to receive crucial components, including security software.
Looks like I'll be busy upgrading people's computers this week.
How'd I get so white and nerdy?

Talk about forced obsolescene. XP is not very old, but I guess MS had to discontinue SP1 support to move everyone to SP2. I thought XP would be supported longer like how Microsoft supported Windows 98 to this year.
    I'm still here. Are you?

Support for a service pack (which is free) is different then support for the product itself. XP will continue mainstream support until 24 months after Vista ships. Security fixes will stop 5 years after that. By that time it's past time to get a new computer.

I guess we kind of have the same thing going on the Mac side. Apple only supports OSX version 10.3.9 and all versions of 10.4.

This may imply that the Mayan clock was off by a few beats.

The vast numbers of rogue computers still running internet explorer 6

will have to be dug out of their caves, Iwo Jima , style.
The old devices will work well as long as they are not connected to the internet.

Some interesting key points (from the article):
On April 8, 2014, Microsoft will officially retire Windows XP
That doesn't mean if you have XP running on some old computer that it will stop working. It does mean that Microsoft will no longer be issuing security patches and updates for XP. So, if hackers find news ways to break into XP, Microsoft won't stop them.
39 percent of the PCs using the Internet these days are using XP...45 percent using Windows 7 and about 3% using Windows 8... Vista at about 5%.
Phasing out something that 2 out of 5 PC owners currently use? It doesn't speak well to loyalty to the customer.
Now run along and play, but don’t get into trouble.

The official support will end , but with a big wallet, that can be
                negotiated.

A while back a neighbor gave me a pile of discs
                being used as frisbees.

Upon examination they were actually school system discs.

They install an earlier version without having to log in.

I just today tossed about 2 dozen old discs in the rubbish. Maybe I should take them out and have mini-frisbees?

                    Excellent point.

I was browsing through some of the recent posts at
hackaday and there was a dude who was using a lathe to cut down full size dvd blanks to mini size.

There seems to be several technical obstacles to be overcome.

I'm one of those 39 percent. I have an XP desktop that's 10 years old. Am currently wondering if I should buy a new desktop (Windows 7, not 8), skip a desktop altogether, or just stick to Macs (I also have a MacBook Pro). My sister just bought Windows 8 and is not happy with it.

Hono, I would respectfully advise keeping both systems.

Having a foot in more than one operating system gives one

                        distinct benefits.

Every now and then it is advisable to vacuum the dust and cat hair that builds up in the desktop towers.

                        Disclosure:

I have run linux operating systems for 10 years
