  • Re: New smoking ban

I found a place that let me smoke at the bar as long as the "wrong" people were not around. Sweeeeeeet. The bar ain't going to get fined - people in the know realise that. It is just that some anti-smoking buttnuggets may start an argument, which that bar trys to avoid. The more sleezy the smoking "policy" - the more I will come - reward them with my business and every smoker should as well.

Some places won't even give us seating and weather protection outside. No way I'm spending money there.

People still come but are spending a lot of time outside loitering and making a mess. Less time inside equals fewer drinks and less money for the bar. You're the crybabies that think a little second hand smoke will kill you. I'll blow some in your face and guess what, you'll still be alive. What a concept.

If you're such a "MAN," I invite you to meet me face to face. Anywhere, anytime and say what you wrote to me in person. I can assure you, I am not a 'crybaby!' By the time I get through with you...you'll be saying "Who's my daddy now?!" And it's gonna be ME!

I wouldn't want to soil my hands on you. Lighten up. People with short fuses often turn to violence when the mind can't respond. Besides you were the one that started talking s--t. As a said, people that offer me nothing get nothing, people that start out with disrespect get disrespect back.

The people behind this ban intend to treat me with disrespect and contempt. Therefore I have contempt for the ban and no respect for them.

Blowing smoke in my face deliberately constitutes as violence in my book.

Forcing me into a street to smoke constitutes forcing me to hazard my life. I wouldn't blow the smoke unless someone was such a jerk that they asked for it.

What are you, a Libertarian? It's completely about YOU, isn't it? Nevermind that the MAJORITY of people in this country don't like being around smokers and don't smoke. Would you be willing to pay the healthcare costs of a secondhand smoke victim who was a nonsmoker but who developed lung cancer, asthma, emphysema or bronchitis because s/he had to share the same air you did? In a way, we're trying to save you from developing those diseases, too.

You could, of course, get around obeying the ban by simply proclaiming that smoking is part of your religion (the Native Americans do use tobacco in their rituals) and that you're practicing freedom of religion. But it better be in a pipe and it better just be tobacco.

Yeah, that's the arguement to get motorcycle riders to wear helmets...Someone gotta pay those healthcare costs. Let's not even get into that one...

I'm still curious why the anti-smokers haven't clamored for tobacco to be illegal.

Oh yeah... those taxes... Ooooh, free money....

What happens when everyone stops smoking and drinking as is hoped for with those idiotic taxes? Let's hear a response to that.

Why are you arguing with a troll?

You just gave a 14-year-old boy exactly what he wanted — he baited you, and you got pissed off. He won. Nice going.

'Cause all that does is open up a big black market, governed by the likes of Al Capone. If people want their vices enough they're gonna get 'em. I don't have any problem with that at all, either, I just don't want to be exposed to it. As I said in my first post I consider it similar to someone taking a whizz in my face. Sure it may not kill me but man that's gross...

Alcohol is a lot more dangerous than any kind of smoking, too, because so many people are killed by drunk drivers each year. And smoking may drain your resources and give you cancer, but it doesn't ruin your life to the degree that alcohol can. Yet they failed in banning alcohol.

So I think the strategy since prohibition has been... if you can't ban 'em, tax 'em...

(And why they haven't done this with pakalolo is beyond me...)

And prostitution and drugs in general. We all know that when government gets their hands in free-enterprise that business will surely fail.

Okay we taxed the hell outta cigs but it's still a viable industry just like gasoline. Nix that thought.
Life is what you make of it...so please read the instructions carefully.

If the "sin tax" money from cigarettes is used for tobacco cessation education or lung cancer research, I see no reason why smokers shouldn't help pay for it. But I do object to the State taking in the money and using it for things other than tobacco cessation programs or lung cancer research.

I don't favor instituting a prohibition against cigarettes because all that banning alcohol did was drive it underground, where criminals profitted. Eventually I think the ban on marijuana will also be loosened, but that's a whole 'nother kettle of worms.

People think that the PNW is such a liberal place, but muse over this: the number of strip joints is tightly controlled in King County (like I think there are only 4 of them within the county limits). Worse, they can't serve alcohol, and with the no smoking ban in all public places, people can't even light up as they watch Katrina bump and grind! Now have any of the strip joints closed down since the no smoking ban was instituted? No. In the last election, people rejected a ballot measure that would also have made it illegal for dancers to come closer than 4 feet away from the customers. I voted against this particular initiative because I don't think it's enforceable and because I think the police should be doing more important things, like catching robbers or investigating murders.

Smokers have every right in the world to smoke, just don't do it where other nonsmoking people like me have to smell it or be exposed to it (and I say this as a former smoker). A pack of brand name smokes up here costs over $5 because of the sin tax, but it has caused the smoking rate among schoolkids to go down. Some convenience stores now sell individual cigarettes, but they'd better not sell any to anyone under 18 who can't prove their age.

Nothing is preventing a bar or restaurant from setting up an enclosed smoking area 20 ft. outside their establishments. It does cost money, which is why the bars especially don't want to do it. But I would get upset if I was still a smoker and I had to smoke a cigarette outside in inclement weather. Oooh! I just had a brainstorm (or fart )! Why not use the tobacco tax money to help small businesses (like bars and restaurants) build outside shelters for their smokers to use? Then smokers couldn't object because the money they were paying would be used to help them...yeah, that's the ticket.

                                Miulang

P.S. The no smoking rules don't apply to Indian reservations. So while everywhere else is nonsmoking, you can still go to a casino and smoke up a storm. I'm pretty sure that if the kanaka maoli were allowed to open casinos on DHHL land, they would be exempt from sales taxes on the ciggies and the nosmoking rules.
