  • The name Koa

Have you met anyone with the name "Koa?" First or middle?

I've found that the word "Koa" means "Warrior" or "Brave." And there's also the tree Koa. Hawaiians use Koa wood to build canoes. Can someone tell me the link between the tree and the word Koa? Why did the Hawaiians call the tree Koa?

We named our dog Koa due to her coloring. Unfortunately, the brave part didn't stick and she's a little chicken dog.

part of our connection with our environment is the attribution of human characteristics to those personified in nature. A koa tree is majestic, strong and doesn't fall easily. Hence warrior.

I have a friend by the first name of Koa... He is a songwriter and his CD is entitled Thirsty Life. We attended the same Bible College.

Koa means: brave, bold, fearless, vailant, bravery, and courage.

                  Educate me in Hawaiian Language.

1.) Ke is similar to Ka. Correct? If so, Ke is like "the." So Kekoa is "The Strong." Would Kakoa be the same?

2.) Also, should be actually be Ke Koa? or Ke' Koa? Cause I looked up Kekoa and there isn't such a word.

3.) Is it proper to name someone "Koa" or should it be "Kekoa"?

most words that begin with A E O and K (with many that begin with P) are lead in with "ke". The majority lead in with "ka", and if those words described above start with an 'okina, than they also usually use "ka".

Another general rule to remember: `okina (`) is a consonant, and you never find two consonants next to each other in `olelo Hawai`i, so the ` mark will always be followed by a vowel.

Thank you for the proper rules too. I guess I need to learn English too. Sorry.

So if I was to name someone "Koa." Is that ok?

Or should it be "Kekoa" or Ke' Koa?"

I've seen "Kekoa" far more often than just "Koa," fwiw. And again, there's no such spelling as Ke` Koa; `okina must be followed by a vowel, so it would not be used preceding a space or the letter K. Hawaiian words don't end in consonants, either (rules, rules, rules - I wonder if it was "easier" when `olelo Hawai`i was an oral language only...?)
