Looking back on all the various American Savings campaigns since the days of Russ & Melveen, I would have to agree with you. Those series of commercials were the most memorable ones that ASB made. But at the time they were let go as commercial spokespersons, I heard it said that Russ & Melveen's antics were so funny that the entertainment aspect overshadowed the commercial messages that the bank wanted to promote. At least, that's my understanding. In this case, maybe the commercials were too well made for their own good, Sue.

But in any case, they belong in my hall of fame for local bank commercial spokespersons. The others are:

Ben & Gloria Tamashiro (Harry & Myra) - Bank of Hawaii
Pat Morita (High Y) - First Hawaiian Bank
Harry Endo (Hawaii Five-0's Che Fong) - Honolulu Federal
Darryl Bonilla (Das My Bank!) - Bank of Hawaii
Alex (the loyalty dog) - Central Pacific Bank (Yeah, I know. A dog! But honestly, that is the only commercial campaign for CPB that I truly find memorable. Everything else they made has been so blah!)
This post may contain an opinion that may conflict with your opinion. Do not take it personal. Polite discussion of difference of opinion is welcome.

Russ and Melveen had great, on-camera chemistry. The out takes were priceless! Fun times! Great memories!

I'd post some of the ads on YouTube if I knew how to do it that is.

Wish I could help you with the YouTube uploads, AJ, but I've never done it. I hear it's easy...if that's any consolation!!! Please, please, please let HT know if you do manage to upload the spots. I'd love to see them again and keep 'em on my iPod.

One memory that's stuck in my brain is Russ and Melveen being chased thru the jungle by "natives", complete with war paint and loin clothes (iirc!). During filming a lunch break was called and, instead of a catered meal on the set, we piled cast and crew in various trucks and headed down the road to Jamesons in Haleiwa. A large table had been reserved, thank goodness, as the restaurant was jammed. We let the war painted, loin clothed natives enter first and find the table!!! Then, in walked Russ, who wasn't too long out of football fame at the time, and Melveen, a very recognizable local celeb...both wardrobed in safari regalia. Once the fearful gasps had subsided we could hear a cacophony of clicking cameras all the way to the back of the parking lot! I don't think lunch has ever been the same at Jamesons!!!

I'm pretty sure I have this commercial with the "natives" you mention, is Russ and Melveen's faces painted in this one? Maybe I'm getting this confused with a safari one they did. They were cute on camera and I think that is the major reason it worked. Russ is doing radio in Vermont or New Hampshire these days.
His brother, Bill lives on Oahu still and works with my wife.

I don't remember but my guess is probably not. Maybe they had "dirt" applied for the chase scene.

OK, thanks for correcting me on that. I told you folks, it was a long time ago and my memory on that one was not very clear. All I remember is the controversy and the sanctions slapped against the Univesity of Hawaii basketball program.

    Regarding the American Savings campaign....

Yeah, they were memorable but for me in an annoying kind of way. The commercials aired too often and were too silly.

On another note one of the worst local ad campaigns was the "Thumbs Up! Hawaii" fiasco from 1995.
    I'm still here. Are you?

Did anybody purchase in Pondarosa Pines after the seeing the commercial? The area looked like the Unibomber would live there.
PONDEROSA PINES? Ah, they had the kid, "Kalani," as the pitchman. That had to be over THIRTY YEARS ago. Kalani Dorean is his real name and he was the fullback on the Kaimuki HS football team.

Remember the home lots in Kona pitched by Jerry Asam? LAND IS THE BASIS OF ALL WEALTH was his motto.

Ahhh... Ponderosa Pines... I recall seeing those ads during Checkers&Pogo... and maybe during Gilligan's Island which ran right after (at 4 p.m.). The ads always seemed meloncholy and somewhat wistful, and I wondered why anyone would want to buy land there. I recall smoky scenes of deer-like wildlife and undertones of urgency mingled with vague desolation.

Wasn't the tag something along the lines of: "Call now, For sure!"

And I always sat there pondering "what the hell does that mean?"

Video less than 10 minutes, smaller than 100MB. .AVI, .MOV, .WMV, or .MPG file format.

How about the story of a 20 dollar bill?
How much Primo beer, Maui Wowee or Kauai Gold can you get with that amount back then while listening to Kalapana?

I know this commercial, because I was in it. This was the Honolulu Boy Choir performing with one or both of the Beamer Brothers. I don't remember it being lip-synched; I think it was live.

The commercial was for the Hawaii Dental Association.

If anyone has this, I'd really like to see it again - and confirm whether or not I was the kid over-emoting in my close-up.

If it was me, you need to cut me some slack - the director (Roy Hallman) REALLY emphasized that we perform with facial expression.

Yes, that's about right. I think it was filmed around 1979 or 1980.

We also did a Christmas commercial where we were holding candles. Don't remember the song - maybe "Caroling, Caroling"? I THINK it was for First Hawaiian Bank, not too sure. We filmed it in the evening at the Nuuanu Reservoir.

I almost lit the hair of the boy in front of me.

Were you in the Boy Choir during the filming of the Jim Nabor's Christmas in Hawaii special during the early 1980s? IIRC, that scene took place in a church on base at Pearl Harbor. Jim sang with the choir. There wasn't a dry eye on the set!

No, sorry, I think I was out of the choir by then - I left the summer of 1982.

One other TV memory - we did a TV Christmas special with Eddie Kamae & the Sons of Hawaii, probably around 1978 or so. We sung "I Love Christmas (Aloha Kalikimaka)" with them, and probably 1 or 2 more songs.

Okay, a few more, KGMB January 1982:

Russ Francis sitting on a horse on Parker Ranch (I think) for American Savings Bank

    Pioneer Chicken with Phyllis Diller

Hawaii Credit Union League w/ Kimo Kahoano as a firedancer

    Andy Bumatai for Mazda

    The Gas Company

KGMB newsbreak with Bob Jones who mentions a beer drinkers nightmare story reported by Don Baker

Honolulu Datsun w/ Phil Arnone I think

    The Krush for Kam Swapmeet

    Lighting Associates

    Ethel's

    Mid Pacific Air

    Royal SeaCliff Club

I don't think the location was Parker Ranch. AAMOF, I don't recall ever shooting outer island for ASB (was it American Savings and Loan then? Can't remember! ). Slowly that scene is surfacing in my tutu brain but it might take 'til tomorrow to remember the location! Most likely No. Shore, tho'. Kualoa Ranch makes sense but I don't recall if it was used for locations that long ago.

Yes, I was just guessing Parker or Kualoa Ranch too.

It would help if I posted the ad so you or others can determine the location.

I will try and work on doing this.

A few older commercials and or older stuff that still click in my head:

The middle 1980's intro to the KITV 4 Newscast with Tim Tindall, Tina Shelton, and Russell Shimooka, I've been looking to see if anyone has this on video and can put this on youtube. I thought this intro was most dignified compared to now.

In the 1990's, Joe Moore instead of the news teaser he would show his feeling toward the episode of ER or do one with Pat Sajak for those who would turn from KHNL to KHON for the news at 10 right after the first credits.

Didi Ah Yo's updated Creative Holidays commercial where she would just say "hi, i'm didi ah yo..." and they would say "AND AWAY WE GO".

The news teasers from KHON from the 1980's to 1990's whenever the announcer would say "UP TO THE MINUTE HEADLINES FROM CHANNEL 2 NEWS".

Just a few thoughts, I'm sure I'll have more later that I can think about.

KITV's news back then had shots of the city at night, with photo's of the news team and the sports would be called "big board sports" whether it was Rick Quan or Russ Shimooka. Rick Quan stayed until 1987, left for the bay area where he still is today, not sure when Russ left for Miami I think and of course came back, later to KGMB and anchored with Jade Moon late 90's. Dave Wiggins moved from sports to weekend anchor around mid 80's if I remember right.
