There's a product I grew up with in South Jersey called TastyKakes; I loved their pies, butterscotch krimpetts, peanutbutter kandykakes and juniors. Their pies were fat rectangles flowing with filling--depending what was in season. Blueberry, rhubarb, chocolate eclair, lemon (my favorite!) and coconut. There was also cherry, apple, peach (yum!); oh my this is right before supper! I'm torturing myself! Anyway, they tried to market in Hawaii but the distance didn't do the product justice. And I think there are enough of us from the Delaware Valley who longed for them while they were on local store shelves, but our thighs spoke louder than our taste buds!

So one year, as a surprise (and to stop him from constantly wailing about missing his butterscotch Krimpets) I ordered a gift pack for him that had assorted TastyKakes. He of course saved those butterscotch Krimpets for eating last, but when he did, he told me he was disappointed...they didn't taste like they did when he was a kid!

I used to eat the brown sugar and cinnamon variety all the time. Now, my middle son goes through phases where they're all he will eat for breakfast. (If not Pop Tarts, it's frozen waffles... still frozen.) I can't eat them out of the package, I need 'em toasted. But I agree, they're too sweet and rich and I usually don't get past the first one.

I, too, used to eat the frosted bs+c variety, but now I find them too sweet. If your area stores carry the "cinnamon roll" flavor, they are the same filling as bs+c, but with a lot less icing - you might enjoy that lower level of sugar. I keep some at home, and probably eat them once every other month or so, out of laziness.

Yes, Susie - Hostess fruit pies are still around, too, from berry flavors to lemon to chocolate, even. Chocolate considered a "fruit?" That's my kinda world.

As for TATTRAT's "mountain oyster" variety --- just ... avoid the "frosting," ok?

I had a gift pack sent to me a few years back, Miulang, and yes, it's just not the same as when we were a kid and the ingredients were raised by Jersey farmers. But I faked it and feigned fulfillment, enjoyment, satisfaction. And I'd give them another chance!!
