  • Newscasters from long ago

Was going thru some old tapes and saw KITV promos with these newscasters, anyone remember them:

    1986 June Grasso
    1986 Kyle Kato

Anyone remember newscasters from way back other than the norm of Bob Jones, Tindall, Sevey, etc.

Do you mean Barbara Tanabe? I think she was at KHON before Joe Moore took over circa 1980.

D'Alani is either thinking about Barbara Tanabe or Carolyn Tanaka. Both formerly worked for KHON.

If there's video of Jack Hawkin's angry and sputtering last broadcast, I wanna see it again...

OK, this goes way back - John Galbraith. He was The First in Hawaii.

                Don Pickens
                Bob Miller
                John Kernell
                Donn Robbs
                Simon Cardew
                Jon Anderson
                Harry Endo
                Tom McWilliams
                Jim Manke
Ken Kashiwahara (mostly a reporter, but he did some anchoring)
                Don Rockwell
Paul Udell (the first time around)

                More later - gotta think

Hey, don't forget (CAN'T forget!) Bob Sevey, whose last day on the air as an anchor was July 4, 1986 - his own Independence Day, which means that he's not been an anchor in Hawaii for 21 years.

KGMB was the station to watch then.....

I can hear the jingle they played when the news would start......

da da da allllll about haaaaaaaaaaaaaawaaaaaaaaaaaaiiiiii it's wonderful
                        something something

                        Bob Jones
                        Linda Cobell
                        Tim Tindall

And I do recall KHON was Eyewitness News (late 70's) at the time long before Joe Moore took over and turned it around big time!

                          Re: Newscasters from long ago

An old friend from long ago in a previous life... Sandra Sagisi, Channel 9 KGMB, started in Utah.

                          Add.....

Britt Reidl - not very long ago from KGMB and her husband Rob Young.
Mel Proctor - he was more of a sports guy than straight news.
Matt Levi - was on KGMB, used to be on the radio in Hilo, KHLO.

Mason Altiery - as previously noted a State Senator, was on KITV or was it still KHVH Channel 4?
                          I'm still here. Are you?

                            Re: Newscasters from long ago

Joe Moore has been at KHON at least since 1981, he did the news back then with Les Keiter.

Tim Tindall started around 1965, of course he later left for KITV circa 1979 or so. Tindall and Lynne Waters were the lead anchors back during the early 80's. Lynne Waters was at KITV from 1981-1985. I think Tindall left around 1992.

Bob Jones started in 1966. Left KGMB 9/94.

Don Rockwell started in 1967 at KHVH (now KITV), he later became the News Director at KITV during the early 80's.

Yes KHON Eyewitness News was what it was called back then I seem to recall Paul Udell working for them back then, he was actually the guy who thought of the traditional shaka at the end of their newscasts which is the norm to this day. The music they play at the end of the credits they have been playing for at least 20 years.

Everyone is welcome to add in sports reporters or field reporters too.

                              Re: Newscasters from long ago

KGMB jingle was "One of the Good things about Hawaii is wonderful...K...G....M....B... they ran this jingle before newscasts until at least around 2001 I am guessing.

Leslie Wilcox was at KGMB for years as well, I think she left in 1992 for KHON.
