There are entire companies that specialize in adapting popular music into those tinny, sometimes grating renditions that can be played by cellular phones (which, to be sure, were never supposed to be hi-fi stereo systems).
So, I am pretty confident that when you grab through legitimate sources that "Hey Ya!" from Outkast ringtone - paying a quarter or a dollar or whatever - someone, somewhere is making sure La Face Records gets their two cents... literally.
Of course, there's no stopping a kid with a MIDI board and too much free time on his hands to adapt the theme song from "Enterprise" to play on his handset. But no, the lawyers and moneymen haven't failed to see those silly custom ringers as a source of perpetual employment!
