    Talofa!

I was just wondering if anyone else on this board likes this group. I love them! I want to see them in concert. Have any of you seen them? I've read reviews of their concerts on their website. Sounds like they put on great shows.

My favorite song is "Pate Pate." What's your favorite?

    I LOVE TE VAKA TOO!

I saw them here in Hawai'i back in November 2005 when they came for the Ma'ohi Festival at the Waikiki Shell. They were fantastic!

They have just released their 5th CD called "Olatia" and it was recently announced that their music will be used at the upcoming Rugby World Cup in France to represent Samoa and New Zealand. Basically, their drum piece Lua Afe will play in the stadiums when the Manu Samoa or All Blacks score a try. They will also perform three live shows in France for team functions.

As much as I love Te Vaka - it's kind of weird that they are representing New Zealand since they only lived there but their songs are mostly in Tuvaluan, Tokelauan & Samoan, plus they live in Australia now. I can think of plenty of Maori music that could have been used but I think they were chosen because of their success in Europe - of course, that's just my opinion.

To purchase their latest CD - check out their website http://www.tevaka.com/ I also recommend their live DVDs (esp. if you've never seen them live). They have one from their show at Apia Park in Samoa in 2002 and a new one from a show they did more recently in Tahiti.

Do check out the film "The Legend of Johnny Lingo" - which they did the soundtrack for. http://www.johnnylingo.com/ It features their only English song - TAMAHANA... written especially for the movie.

My cousin, my tutu's first cousin, starred in this Johnny Lingo. For reals. I also get a great uncle (RIP) who was a supporting actor in the movie Hawaii. My tutu always says I should have been an actress cause I'm "dramatic." Guess the flair for da dramatic is in da koko.

As for Te Vaka, I LOVE TE VAKA. Words cannot describe it. I'd love to see them live.
I'm disgusted and repulsed, and I can't look away.

Mahalo for that! I love Te Vaka, too. I only have the Ki Mua album.

I found Pate Pate on YouTube, as well as other Te Vaka music apparently issued by them.

And while they weren't previously on iTunes, I just checked and there are now four Te Vaka albums available on iTunes. The latest one you mention isn't there yet.
Well I am just a monkey man, I'm glad you are a monkey woman too.

Mahalo to all of you for your responses! Oh yeah, I love the song "Tamahana" too.
I wanted to know, are there any sites I can go to and listen to samples from their "Olatia" album?

Oh yeah, another question just popped into my head. On youtube I have heard what sounds to me like a "Pate Pate" remix, and I wanted to know if this is recorded on any album. I can't find it on one of theirs, but maybe it's on something else? Has anyone else heard this?

              Re: Te Vaka

I just returned from Samoa and there's a guy called VANIAH TOLOA that is very popular. He is half Samoan - half Tokelauan and he (along with his sister Jewel) sing in both languages. The music is very similar to Te Vaka.

I read in the South Pacific Express in-flight magazine that Vaniah just wrapped up a successful tour in American Samoa followed by shows in Samoa (I was fortunate to catch them there live) and that they are coming to Hawai'i next. I haven't been able to confirm any dates or venues yet but will post it here if and when I do.

He has a few clips on You Tube and when I get my act together, I'll post some of the clips I shot at the live show in Apia.

I just listened to some song samples. I like him! I was just wondering though, does he do anything that is similar to "Pate Pate" with log drums and stuff?

Don't think so - he lives in Samoa so seems more "traditional" than Te Vaka (less "techno") but I mainly like his ballads.

Check out my clips from the live show - the first is his tribute to the Manu Samoa rugby team.

and the second, his biggest hit (my fave) - a ballad with his sister Jewel...
