  • Tsunami Alert for 08/15/07

It's a busy day for the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.

Earlier today, a magnitude 6.8 earthquake in the Aleutian Islands off Alaska raised an alert, but at 10:30 a.m. the all clear was issued.

Moments ago, a magnitude 7.9 (!!!) earthquake in Peru has prompted a preliminary tsunami warning and watch for adjacent regions, and the PTWC notes that it may issue a watch or warning notice for Hawaii. If waves are generated, they'd arrive after 2 a.m.

damn, if it is for real, I gotta go bug out my office.

On a more humorous note, what is left, natural disaster-wise?

      hurricanes? check
      earthquakes? check
      tsunamis?....

might as well dig up my "Day After" dvd and nuke me up some popcorn...

Yeah, if Brooklyn, NY, can have one, then I suppose Hawai'i could have one, too.

Actually I think there was one a few years back. I can't recall when exactly tho, just remember an email saying "There's a *@!*% TORNADO!!"

                Ooo....it was long time back:

                http://the.honoluluadvertiser.com/ar.../ln/ln03a.html

A weather phenomenon rare in Hawai'i showed up and touched down in Central O'ahu yesterday afternoon when a tornado the length of four football fields kicked up red dirt and scattered rocks for four furious minutes.

                  So,

                  All jokes aside.

I'm in Hilo. I know nothing from Tsunamis.

What do I do to prepare ?

Also, how high up in town do I need to be to avoid it ?

How much advance notice is there to evacuate ? Do they use a siren ?

Some help on this please, my wife is freaking out.

you wait for civil defense to tell us if a swell is detected by any buoys. You will find out when we do. If we do, then you head up to Komohana Avenue and hang with the rest of the Hiloans having their tsunami party. Remember, if a tsunami was generated, it will hit in the wee hours of the morning. So keep the news on.

Thanx Pua'i. I have no tv right now...cable hasn't been activated yet. No radio either. I guess I'll go get one now.

In all sincerity, praying a bit here.

                          Look on this page:

                          http://www.prh.noaa.gov/ptwc/hawaii.php

It's a form you fill out to see if you're in an evacuation zone. There's links there that'll give you info, but the site is slow for me so it's probably getting slammed.

The site says that it provides the same information that is in the front of the phone book.

Check out the Disaster Preparedness Guide (yellow section) in the Hawaiian Telcom Yellow Pages to see if you are in an area likely to be impacted by a tsunami.

Luckily we couldn't afford ocean front property.

Pele should have lava heading to the sea and adding to the Big Island's area.
