  • Songs About Planets

I'm putting together a not-so-little party with a planets theme. I'm looking for music suggestions. I was thinking of a bunch of songs about planets. Genre doesn't matter - though heavy metal or rap wouldn't work for this crowd. I heard Sting's "Walking on the Moon" the other day and got the idea. Of course, now I can't think of any other songs with that theme. Space travel might work too - like Bowie's Major Tom. Any suggestions?

          Re: songs about planets

I like these kind of jukebox threads. Food. Planes, trains 'n automobiles. Now this. Nice!!! No metal or rap, huh? Phooey! That's OK. That genre only writes about sex, money and death anyways. lol

Once again, Mel comes up with "Da' Mastah List"!

          Not yet mentioned...

          Invisible Sun - The Police
          One World
          - The Police
When the World is Running Down - The Police
Rocket - Def Leppard (pushing your metal threshold here, but it's pretty friendly)

Mel mentioned the Star Wars theme, Meco disco version. I always loved that one! I used to have the LP. It's like Chewbacca in Bell-bottomed pants. lol

                  Re: songs about planets

Excellent! Thank you. For some reason I always have it in my head that David Bowie did Major Tom - am I thinking of the same song? Or does Bowie talk about a Major Tom in Space Oddity??? I would have listened to Bowie but I never heard of the other guy(see-just had to scroll down to check his name agin) Peter Shilling. It's been a long time since I've heard either one. Suggestions are great so far. I'm basically putting together a CD that'll be primarily background music. I'm dealing with acrowd that ranges in age from 18 to 100. The younger set probably wouldn't mind rap or metal. I know a few coming would prefer that. But they'll have to deal and they're not really a position to barter .

                    Re: songs about planets

"Ground control to Major Tom..." yep, that is mentioned in David Bowie's "Space Oddity"...

                    More lyrics:

                    (partial)

                    Ground control to major tom
                    Commencing countdown, engines on
Check ignition and may gods love be with you

Ten, nine, eight, seven, six, five,
                    Four, three, two, one, liftoff

This is ground control to major tom
                    Youve really made the grade
And the papers want to know whose shirts you wear
Now its time to leave the capsule if you dare
From a Wikipedia article on Pete Schilling:

His 1983 album, Error in the System, generated his only international hit single, "Major Tom (Coming Home)", a retelling of David Bowie's classic 1969 song "Space Oddity". Although the song was originally recorded in German, the international hit version was sung in English.
