  • Thanksgiving 2007

Well Pilgrims, what's happening for Thanksgiving this year? Host of the feast? Or guest? Cookin' from scratch? Or Turkey-To-Go? Going on a trip? Other?

In recent years' past we've done the Turkey-To-Go thing.

This year my sister is the cook (an excellent one at that) and host. Throw in a whole lotta' chit-chat, some TV time, tinkering around the house, followed by a Tryptophan-induced nap, with just enough rest to prepare for Black Friday (except me). Pretty much standard fare expected.

Guest. Each year, my sister (who lives on the other side of Lake Washington from Seattle) has us over for either Thanksgiving or Christmas. Since we plan to spend Christmas with my mother (a couple hours away on the Olympic Peninsula), it's over to the sister's for Thanksgiving.

            Re: Thanksgiving 2007

I always have Thanksgiving dinner at my mom and dad's home. They cook everything from scratch and in my opinion it's the best tasting I've ever had anywhere.

Their menu usually includes: A brine soaked turkey stuffed with apples, celery, onions smoked in the kamado with kiawe or guava wood. An asian/american fusion stuffing with mochi rice and barley. Homemade cranberry sauce with orange zest, a butter/herb seasoned baked loaf of bread, candied yams topped with marshmallows. Hawaii grown corn on the cob. A foster farm glazed ham. Green beans flavored with bacon and onions and a mandarin orange cottage cheese jello mold.

My part is to bring the pumpkin pie. In years past, I used to make the pie from scratch, substituting the evaporated milk in the recipe with half and half or heavy cream and (a trick I learned from my mother) adding more powdered ginger which greatly enhances the taste of the pumpkin, but gives it a "weird" color. But because my father is diabetic, and usually shares just one slice of pie with mom, I now usually buy the smallest pumpkin pie from St. Germain Bakery. Otherwise I'm left with too much pie, and I'm not really a dessert person anyway.

My mom and dad also tell me to bring over any friends of mine who don't have any family here, or anyplace to go on this holiday which is really nice of them. I have cooked the whole "shebang" myself, usually over a good friend's house who wanted to host thanksgiving but doesn't know how to cook her/himself.

                  Re: Thanksgiving 2007

We are hosting T-Day dinner at our house and the dearly beloved has invited a couple of new transplants who are single and without family. In an effort to make sure they have some of their Thanksgiving favorites, I must make a green bean casserole. I am ashamed to admit that I have never made this dish. Does anyone have a tried and true recipe that includes the crunchy fried onion topping? I don't want to do a 'test run' on this dish and don't really trust the one on the label as it seems incredibly bland (maybe that is the point), so am asking for any help or advice.

                    Re: Thanksgiving 2007

I have to admit, I don't think I've ever tasted that highly popular dish known as green bean casserole (which is often mentioned as a Thanksgiving favorite). It might just be me (or my family). I've always wondered if green bean casserole was a mainland thing, and for one reason or another, was never adopted by locals. I don't know. We do have other side dishes we serve for Thanksgiving ... like sushi and poke, which surely isn't a tradition on the mainland.

(I know this doesn't help you, Glossyp, sorry. )

My ohana is going to celebrate at my tita's house. My tita's extended family from the in-laws will be coming to visit, so it should be a packed hale. I'm sure we will be celebrating with the traditional turkey, stuffing, mashers, etc. but, we will also be noshing on some dim sum, sushi, roast duck, kalua pig, poi, and can't forget da rice

I don't celebrate it, ever since my freshman year in college (9 years ago). I mean, what's the point of spending all that money to express your thankfulness? I'm already thankful for everything each day of the year.

I'm just curious...Not even with your parents? I'm only asking because I think my own parents would be hurt if I didn't come over for Thanksgiving, especially since I'm the only one of my siblings who still lives here.
