Seen a strange or unusual road sign in our Aloha State? Post it here!
I still think it's strange to have interstates on an island

I find the Nene crossing signs weird...I've never seen a Nene crossing

Maybe I should know this already, but why does Zippy's Kapolei have a BLUE stop sign?
Picture below from my own archieve, taken in 2006.
I'm disgusted and repulsed, and I can't look away.
I wondered the same thing about the STOP signs at CompUSA on Ala Moana Blvd., which are also blue.
The initial answer would be that these signs are located on private property; so they can do what they want? Yet, they're located within the entrance and view to public roadways, so it seems out of the norm.
What's probably more controversial though at the Kaka'ako CompUSA are the parking policy signs. lol Who cares though, since they're closing soon.
I've seen the blue stop signs sporadically as well. I've seen them in Mililani, Waipahu and in town. I hve no idea why they are blue.
n'importe
Discussed here. The state Traffic Code, specifically Section 291C-36 of the Hawaii Revised Statutes, regarding "Display of unauthorized signs, signals, or markings," says it is illegal to "place, maintain, or display upon or in view of any highway" any unauthorized sign "which purports to be or is an imitation of or resembles an official traffic-control device ... or which attempts to direct the movement of traffic. ..."
It would appear that private property owners have to use non-red stop signs.
However, according to an official with the city Department of Transportation Services, there is nothing to prevent such signs from being red as long as they do not "interfere with an official traffic-control device." The city has decided they don't.
On the Big Island at the Parker Ranch Center in Waimea.... WHOA instead of STOP.
Caught this one near Waikiki and Kapahulu area.
Mel, I think that is a case of "I hope they are looking(no pun intended) out for one another".

IIRC, on a street in Kailua, about a block east of Kalaheo High School there were/are DUCK CROSSING signs with an image of a duck.
There's also HORSE CROSSING signs at various locations in Waimanalo.
I've seen some 12 or 14 mph speed limit signs in some hotel parking lots
Whoah! I guess that's how hotels make room for more guests. By taking out the ones currently staying there.
Kalaniana'ole highway heading out east Oahu should be 45 MPH, not 35. Everyone drives 40-45 (some over that) anyway. Until they see a cop, then they slow down.
Now that Kalapana is gone, duct tape does the trick....
Funny....

HeeHee! I like that one. BTW thanks for the heads up for my Hawaii driving test.....
Here's my niece Kalei with another sign that we passed on a recent road trip on Maui on our way to Ulupalakua....
I haven't taken a picture yet, but as I walk from the office at Dole/University down toward Puck's Alley, there are signs under the overpass that read 'Dead Birds Call xxx-xxxx'.
The state apparently will retrieve any little deceased bird bodies lying under the bridge if you call and tell them. However, the cartoonist side of my brain conjures up an image of zombie birds peeping and clucking into little cel phones.....
Someone's a wiseguy. Maybe even an MC Hammer fan.![]()
"Donkey Crossing" sign on Queen Kaahumanu Hwy north of Kona.
The donkeys are now gone (relocated), but the sign is still there.
"Dead end" sign at end of a roadway in Honolulu, which happens to be the border of a cemetary. (I have an old picture, but no way to post it.)
Now run along and play, but don’t get into trouble.
Life is what you make of it...so please read the instructions carefully.
Well, there really isn't that much else to do between Kona and the turnoff to Hapuna.
The white rocks do not bother me so much, but the jerks who paint on the black lava with white spraypaint deserve to have to do some public service, like warning tourists not to jaywalk across the busy highway. (And the spray painter are not usually tourists, but are mostly our own homegrown jerks.)
Sorry to go off topic of "road signs".
Now run along and play, but don’t get into trouble.
OK...so I know this isn't a ROAD sign, but it's a sign in Hawaii at least...
Wonder how long it will take them (if they ever bother) to replace this one instead of the hastily added "gl" permanent marker repair?
