Well, at least pau with the race photos.
Something else that was happened during the race, but I'll post those photos separately.

I found a body floating in the water yesterday.

I’d headed up to ‘A’ mark well ahead of the fleet, intending to get photos of everyone rounding it, but shortly before getting there I saw the body in the water a ways off. (After a couple of decades of doing offshore search-and-rescue I was pretty sure of what I was seeing.) Hammering the throttles, I blasted toward the victim and prepared to call the Coast Guard and the police.
Getting closer… yep, it was a body.
But getting right up to it… it was a plastic mannequin!
Turns out the Coast Guard Auxiliary was doing a man-overboard drill. They were way off in the distance but came over when they saw me near the ‘body’ to tell me what they were doing and congratulate me for being observant. I reminded them that it would have been appropriate if they’d broadcasted a message that a drill was in progress, then I radioed the racers to advise them of the fake body near ‘A’ mark.
Here's a shot (taken afterward; that's the CG Auxiliary boat in the background) of what I'd seen at first:

Getting closer, I'd seen this. Doesn't it look like a real body?:

      But then:

      Sheesh.

Can't tell you how much I enjoy these photos! My dad used to have a small 19' Mercury; kept it moored at Kewalo Basin. Every Sunday we'd go sailing around Diamond Head; those are some of the happiest memories of my life!

I'll be there. Anyone else going?
Also, remember the two one-hour specials on ESPN2 -- 3pm on October 8 and 7pm on October 9.
NOTE: It airs at 6pm tomorrow (Thursday) night, not 7pm as printed on the flyer.
At least, on Oceanic's schedules it's at 6pm. Who knows?
I'll be in a meeting, so I set my DVR for 6pm to 8pm, just in case.

Last Sunday I served as the Safety Boat for the Hawaii Youth Sailing Association. (This is the sixth year I've been involved with HYSA.) There were four races that day, in two classes of boats -- El Toros (a 7' boat with a logo on the sails that looks like a mushroom) and Lasers (slightly longer and more complex, and the sail logos look like an asterisk).
There were about 40 kids participating and they came from all around the island and from the Junior Sailing programs at various local yacht clubs. The weather was just perfect for the children, with no rain and with wind at about 10 to 12 knots.
Starting at 11am, we ran two races, passed out lunches that we'd prepared for the kids, ran two more races, then had the awards ceremony and a big barbecue afterwards and showed videos from three different videographers, including one on my boat. In the next week we'll make CD's for all the kids, with the videos and with my still photos.
Here comes some of those photos, starting with a pre-race preparations at Kaneohe Yacht Club:

Sailing Lasers is quite a workout:

Last two photos and a final comment:

Back in the day, I too enjoyed sailing the little 7' El Toros like the ones in the two photos above. There used to be an event called the Iron Man Race, where we actually sailed them out into the open ocean... for about 200 yards. Well, I felt that was too short to qualify as an Iron Man, so I sailed one across 32 miles of open ocean, about the distance from Molokai to Oahu. Good fun, though I was glad I had an escort boat, just in case.
Anyway. Pau for now. Hope you enjoyed seeing the kids.

It was a dark and stormy night, and somewhere a dog barked.

                            Well, kinda.
Yesterday was pretty dark and stormy, and I'm sure a dog was barking somewhere, but it wasn't "night." It was daytime, and the final race of the series. Very cloudy and rain squalls all around, but none hit us. Winds were about 15-18 knots at the start of the race and increased to 22-25, with a few gusts measured at 33 knots at the very end of the race.
That made it a tricky day to take photos, with bouncy boats (including mine) from the wind-chop waves and also with salt spray trying to attack my camera, but here we go:
