  • Movies you feel are UNDERrated

We heard from the overrated, now which of your faves is underrated?

Here are a few of my gems....

Starship Troopers: I loved this movie when it first came out, and I still love it today. It's not cinematic brilliance, but it's damn entertaining in the vein of Paul Verhoeven's other sci-fi endeavors, "Robocop" and "Total Recall"

Zodiac: This is one movie many overlooked. Knowing that it was based on true events creeps me out.

Bowfinger:Steve Martin and Eddie Murphy in a tremendous riff on all the insanity in trying to actually make a movie. Bombed horribly, so maybe it was a bit too inside for the actual public, but I laughed my ass off.

The 25th Hour:One of my favorite movies that never gets any love. IMO, the only film by Spike Lee that wasn't over the top .

Eraserhead - This film is largely underrated because it makes people think critically, and many people are just too damn lazy to think critically.

Cannibal Holocaust - Baby, it's so good that it's banned in some countries! The perfect film tailor made for gore hounds. The film was so good at what it did that it was actually thought to be a snuff film.
But don't let the bloody exterior fool you. Cannibal Holocaust has this ability to shiver your spine and send your mind reeling.

Alice, Sweet Alice - Nothing is as it appears in this film.

The Bad Seed - Are people born wicked? Or do they have wickedness thrust upon them?

Whatever Happened To Baby Jane? - Bette Davis shines in this gem of a movie! This one is a classic that many will never see or even hear about.

Monty Python's Life of Brian - "Blasphemy" at its finest!

    I second The 25th Hour!

Unfortunately I read the book before watching the movie. I will never know the joy you feel

Haven't seen this one. Synopsis looks interesting. Despite your plug for Starship Troopers I shall check this one out. That's how forgiving of a person I am.

I think people just couldn't get past the hair.

Hmm. 89% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Must be good.

      *sigh*

Seen none of these. At least I saw Life of Brian.

That's one of my favorite Japanese movies, too. A true original.

Also, Shall We Dance, the original Japanese movie, not the Richard Gere/Jennifer Lopez re-make (which I haven't seen, BTW).

Other movies that comes to mind: Fast Times at Ridgemont High (Sean Penn is hilarious), and Gremlins (hmmm ... another movie with Phoebe Cates).

I would like to add to my list another movie I think is hilarious:
                  School of Rock.

Any movie directed by John Sayles for the Independent film crowd.
Run Lola Run for the "Roshomon" type of flashbacks as the German lead character runs through different versions of a moment in her life to a synthesize beat.
Strange Brew for fans of "SCTV" and The McKenzie Brothers. So Take Off, Hoser!

Creepy, creepy film with Colin Firth (before anyone outside of Britain really, really knew him) and Hart Bochner (who proved he could act).
