Heh, I know what you mean. For the longest time I didn't like sashimi, until I started watching those Japanese cultural shows on K5. They were enjoying sushi so much, I decided to give it another try and now I'm hooked.

Masked and Anonymous - This is a movie that very loosely reflects Bob Dylan's life, starring Bob Dylan. I think many would watch it and say 'What the hell?!?'. It's one of my favorites, though.

Tokyo Godfathers - This is one of the few pieces of "Japanimation" that I really care for. It's underrated because it's art, not the mind numbing entertainment that so many people use as an opiate. It has a basic storyline of unlikely heroes fighting to return a lost child to its parents, but it's surprisingly original and emotional.

Triplets of Belleville - This is another animated goodie that's a work of art instead of entertainment opium. It involves three elderly singers who help a grandmother and her aging dog find her grandson, who was kidnapped during the Tour de France with two other cyclists. There is no dialogue in this movie. In fact, there's hardly any talking at all. Instead, it tells the story through music and pantomime.

Here's a little clip from the very beginning of the movie. This is a "flashback" sort of sequence where we see the triplets in their heyday, along with an assortment of real life celebrities of yesterday. Django Reinhardt is seen playing the guitar and Josephine Baker (the half naked lady in the banana skirt) dances onstage with the triplets. While the film is done in unique animation, it is not all in the style you will see in the clip. The opening clip is meant to mimic old cartoons.

By the by, the song that the triplets are singing is in French, but the English translation is provided below. Obviously, they are not intended to make any sense.
                      The lyrics are:

                      Swinging Belleville rendevouz
                      Marathon dancing, doop-de-doo
                      Voodoo, can-can, balais, taboo
                      In Belleville swinging rendevouz...

Oh is he? I enjoyed the Japanese version (gag on the American remake). I think I first saw it during a Hawaii Film Festival screening. I remember another Japanese movie...titled "Buddies" perhaps? It was fun too.

Albert Brooks movies: Anyone whose real name is Albert Einstein must be a genius.
Lost in America: A yuppie couple goes on a trip across America to find themselves. On their first stop, they lose all their savings in Vegas. A funny scene is when Albert Brooks tries to convince a casino owner to give back the money he lost in gambling for marketing reasons.
Real Life: A movie made in the 1970's about a reality show focusing on a real life family. This movie predicted what reality shows would become today with made up conflict when nothing is happening.

Excellent choice of AB. The crossing guard scene and that whole situation in 'zona is a crack-up.

Which AB movie was it where he's broken up with his girlfriend and in one scene he's looking at his books or tapes and says lovingly "these are all my friends"

                                "Away From Her"

Julie Christie was nominated for an academy award as a wife who is facing alzheimers and how she and her husband attempt to cope with it. Great realistic subdued movie about alzheimer's without any cliched movie melodramatics....this is not your normal movie schlock. An unexpected yet realistic turn in the movie plot makes the husband's situation heart wrenching. I would almost kill myself were I in his shoes.
