Anyone remember this flick back in the 80's?

I still love this movie for some reason.

Lots of story in this one too with the Hui supposedly kidnapping the director???

I remember that film! My former assistant had a fairly significant role and my former business partner was the production manager. I have it on VHS...somewhere! I don't think I was ever aware of the hui/director situation but that doesn't mean it didn't happen!

So what you are saying/asking is not a plot point of the movie but rather something that happen during the making of the movie?

        Re: The North Shore

I saw this film the day it was released, at Kapiolani Theater, and then again that same week. I LOVE THIS FILM. I know so much of it is lame, but first of all, Nia Peeples. Plus all those great surfers, plus Makaha Sons of Niihau and Makaha masquerading as the North Shore.

        I think it's a most enjoyable film.

        Nia Peeples. * swoon *

"Eh, Vince! We go poun' 'em!" "You took ees stuff; YOU poun' 'em."
"Eh, hoale!" "Haole to you too!"
        "Hui chicks: Be careful!"

Yeah this was NOT a plot in the movie, but real life...

"Fast Eddie" Rothman headed a group then called Hui O He'e Nalu, more commonly referred to as the "Black Trunks," which prosecutors alleged was engaged in extorting surf-meet promoters and film directors on the North Shore.

The story from what i recall was... since they were featuring "the hui" in the film originally in a bad light, they kidnapped the director and told him not to mess with the hui or make them look bad and to pay up....

I've got North Shore on DVD, Blue Crush too. I can't wait to be at Waimea and Pipeline etc this winter to see, be part of, and photograph the whole scene when the BIG WAVES show up.

Sounds like a plan. I was searching the web for some shots of the North Shore and I found Sean Davey's site: http://www.seandavey.com/195/Search/Waves?page=5

He's got some great shots of waves and surfing etc.

When it gets closer to winter, maybe we can time it to be there when one of the big competitions is going on. As I understand it, the day they pick isn't necessarily known until about the time the surf is at it's peak. But I imagine there's lots going on any time the waves really start rolling.

                    Re: The North Shore

"North Shore" is either you love it or HATE it........
I liked the film but hate to say at least 1/4 of the movie and da way da braddahs stay talkin pidgin was not beliveable.
As for the movie "Blue Crush" I could definately relate to this film especially the scene where Kate Bosworth and crew are trying to buy food at some Chevron Outlet and get harassed by da sista at da register cuz dey get foodstamps and so forth and the late James Grant Benton reminding Big Sis Kate about little sis arriving to school late. IMO these were moments that could happen. Between "North Shore" and "Blue Crush" I kinda lean towards BLUE CRUSH

Since this topic is up, are there any other movies about locals life, culture? I've been looking, but having trouble finding any. Thanks.

yeah sean has some great stuff. i like his style. although all my shots will be from the beach! those underwater rigs for DSLR's are mucho expensive.

i'll post some of my older north shore shots in the pics thread later. i have to dig them out... yeah the Triple Crown is cool, but WAY packed, i've never seen so many people in such a small place at once... come january we can track the swells and find a good time.
