Seems to be a dearth of furniture stores on Oahu. I was actually sad when Sears stopped carrying furniture here. The styles here are very limited and pieces that I would consider purchasing are outrageously expensive. I know that it seems unholy, but I'd love to see an Ikea here. Or even one of these. Seems like we would be an ideal market for this.

    Muji, anyone?

Are there still a lot of furniture stores in Honolulu that carry rattan items?

I feel your pain. I recently had to buy new furniture and went to just about every furniture store on Oahu. Most of the stores in town had lots of trendy fashion furniture at outrages prices. But I don't really need an orange leather sofa that costs $3000. The best value I found was at ABC furniture in Waipahu. They had decent quality at reasonable prices. If you go, also check out DiscoMart a few blocks away. I didn't find anything I liked there, but the prices were also reasonable. RoomStores in Salt Lake is a little more expensive but wasn't too bad either.

As I've posted so many time before, I'd love, Love, LOVE to see an Ikea here and think it would do well.

        (Ditto for Trader Joe's!)

I have always been of the opinion with minor deferrals that they furniture here
is like "game show furniture" in look and quality. Remember Broyhill?

I too concur, IKEA would be great!! And Restoration Hardware! I got my dining set from there 6 years ago and had outrageous shipping
fees but worth it..........I'll have to keep it forever!

                  Re: Furniture stores

I bought a sofa-loveseat set from ABC three years ago. Leather with the elevated foot-rests. I'm dissatisfied with their "service." Or, rather, lack of.

One of the foot-rest pads was loosened: it seems that the screw is a bit short. The arm-rest on one side of the loveseat has fallen away (but not completely separated), so the piece is lopsided. There were also some minor scuffs on the back of the sofa, but someone was supposed to come over to treat it ....... never showed up or called back to make another appointment. When I called to inquire about getting these problems fixed, they said they needed to get approval from the manufacturer (I thought they "manufactured" these pieces). Later, they offered to exchange these defective pieces for a newer set, with me picking up the cost difference.

I gave up on these guys and cannot give them a ringing endorsement. Totally non-responsive and can't stand behind their products. It hasn't helped that I've had to recuperate the last two years from congestive heart failure.

                    Re: Furniture stores

I love Ikea. Back when they didn't ship to Hawaii, I went through shiptohawaii.com. They might still be cheaper than shipping direct from Ikea.

This is a shelf I bought from Ikea about a year ago:

It was only $200. Shipping it to Hawaii doubled the price, but it's not some cheap-ass Sauder Woodworking City Mill crap; it's a good, solid, heavy 6-ft tall and 6-ft wide shelf, easily worth the $400 it cost me total. Hell, it looks like I paid at least a grand for it. I really wish they would open an Ikea in Hawaii.

If any of you want to buy one, here's the link: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/60071358

Beautiful shelf unit, zff. I'm impressed! Another store I'd like to see here is West Elm. I've not ordered from this company but I receive their catalogue. It's probably a notch up from Ikea but still reasonable.

                              Re: Furniture stores

When I needed a living room set, I went on an endless search for almost 2 months. I was sick & tired of looking at (what seems like) the same pieces of furniture...leather or microfiber. Z Home & Inspiration lacks the quality but charges an arm & a leg. When I asked the salesperson at Inspiration questions about what type of foam was used & what type of materials were used for the frame he looked at me in confusion and said, "uh...well, let's check!" Not the answer I was looking for when asking about a $3,000 sofa.

I finally found what I was looking for at...DiscoMart in Waipahu of all places. I never went there before, and well, to be honest, the name of the store doesn't exactly sound enticing. However, they had a wonderful salesperson who knew her stuff! (She must have been almost 90 years old!) She answered all my questions about the materials, foam, frame, etc and the sofa was made in america and was backed with a lifetime guarantee for the foam & framework.

I have been "window shopping" in a couple of stores for about a month or so...Pacific Home on Ward has some really fresh furniture pieces (but very pricey!) and I went in this cute store called "Fishcake" on Kamani Street (near Ann Namba & Bali Aga). Very kitschy style...super cute stuff!

I stopped by the West Elm store in Vegas (Near the Green vally casino). The salespeople in there didn't bother greeting me (even though I was the only one in the store), so I pretty much walked in & walked out. Too bad, they had some interesting accessories I would have purchased.
Bitter & Sweet....all in one bite.
