  • The reasons why you would watch a movie

I was kind of curious as to what criteria other people use to watch a movie (be it in a theater, or on TV or some other media, where you are watching it is not important but rather why are you watching it).

There is a poll attached to this thread, it's multiple choice and I am going to make it a public poll.
    75
    actors in the movie
    17.33%
    13
crew behind the camera (director, writers, etc)
    6.67%
    5
    genre (type of movie)
    21.33%
    16
story or plot of the movie (based on the preview)
    22.67%
    17
    movie review (TV, radio, print)
    9.33%
    7
    word of mouth
    6.67%
    5
    went with someone else
    4.00%
    3
    based on a true story
    5.33%
    4
    other reasons not listed above

It really depends on the story. The genre might get me there sooner (I like historical stories and animated features.)

The reasons why you would watch a movie
Usually I start with "I wouldn't mind seeing that movie" but then:
        - It's at a theater with lousy seating.
        - It's at a theater with a noisy/flashy before-show video feed. Music & still slides are bad enough.
        - The times don't mesh with school, family, or other activities.
        - It's too crowded for the first few weeks, then it drops off the media's attention and I forget that it's still showing.
        - The surf is good.

Before long it's out on DVD or on TV...
Youth may be wasted on the young, but retirement is wasted on the old.
Live like you're dying, invest like you're immortal.
We grow old if we stop playing, but it's never too late to have a happy childhood.
Forget about who you were-- discover who you are.

The STORY is the main thing goin for me when deciding to see this NOW, wait for DVD or just avoid at all costs, who is in this the next thing, buncha unknowns I can overlook, who knows that they will be big stars someday!

A well thought out story is what's hoped for.
I'll take a lot of the seedier sides of life if there's a point to it,
but prefer lighter, dare I say loving, happy ending stuff.

I have to admit that now days, I do just wait for a movie to come out on DVD. I don't like waiting in line for $10 tickets, then putting up with rude people in the theater. Expensive concession stand prices and the effort of just getting there to the theater. I much prefer just waiting for Netflix to mail me the movie.

Re: The reasons why you would watch a movie

I'm not as into movies these days as I used to be. Everything seems the same. I'll start watching something and be like, "Oh, if XXX movie and YYY movie had a lovechild, it would be this!" And then I start commentating on it, which drives my husband crazy, but is Big Fun for me because I'm already bored.

So it really takes a good story to suck me in. I would say I probably watch maybe 2 movies a month, and that's counting all places- theaters, Netflix, rentals, ones we own, or on TV.

Can't think of anything creative this time

Re: The reasons why you would watch a movie

I will consider watching a movie if it's animated (Monsters Inc., Shrek, etc.), or supposed to be funny, but frankly, they all indeed ARE so much alike, and I will not sit thru 1-2 hours of filthy language. I'm no prude, but it grates on me after awhile. I hate going to the theater! We subscribe to Netflix and my husband LOVES movies, so that keeps him happy. But, as for me, I would almost rather do anything else than watch a movie! And then when I do watch one, I start analyzing it and taking it all apart, which ticks my hubby off, so I shut up and keep quiet till the end. I'd rather clean house!

Both of the last two posts were especially funny...
                      and truthful. Thanks.

Another reason I have been using (or guilty of) sometimes is that it is the next movie playing.

Brad Pitt or Meryl Streep is in it, or it's directed by Spielberg.

If Ridley Scott is the director, that gets my attention, but he's pushed some stinkers as well... so that's not all.

I don't like comedy - I get enough at home. I like 'historical fiction,' thoughtful fantasy (i.e., The Illusionist), SciFi only if it's realistic, or far out.

I'm the opposite of Kaonohi! Bring on the comedy. Laughter is my #1 prerequisite. I usually wait for the DVD on half.com, add it to my collection then forget to watch it! Damn :30 mentality!
