  • Cheney in favor of gay marriage

Former Vice President Dick Cheney said Monday he supports gays being able to marry but believes states, not the federal government, should make the decision.

"I think, you know, freedom means freedom for everyone," Cheney said in a speech at the National Press Club. "I think people ought to be free to enter into any kind of union they wish, any kind of arrangement they wish."

Cheney, who has a gay daughter, said marriage has always been a state issue.

"And I think that's the way it ought to be handled today, that is, on a state-by-state basis. Different states will make different decisions. But I don't have any problem with that. I think people ought to get a shot at that," he said.
Good of him to state that position publicly; after all, it's important to members of his own family.

But unfortunately, it's rather outdated to look at it as simply a state issue. He needs to review the case of Loving v. Virginia; even though there was no federal miscegenation law, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the state laws were unconstitutional.

I wonder if he would feel the same way about the issue if his daughter weren't gay.

Of course not. And you notice he never commented on the issue until he's way out of office...?
Kinda like Clinton's "I think marijuana should be legalized" statement AFTER he's out of position to make it happen.

Cheney's far from being alone on this view. This may surprise you, but some same sex marriage advocates want to take the state-by-state approach, at least for the time being. They're afraid of being dealt a setback by an evenly divided US Supreme Court that could go either way. Those advocates don't want the hard-fought gains that have been made so far to potentially be wiped out on what could be a roll of the dice.

It's just as well. By the time one or more of the current conservative bloc(Roberts, Scalia, Thomas, Alito) retires and is hopefully replaced by more moderate justices, the chances are excellent that more states will have legalized same sex marriage on their own and be accepted by the mainstream.

Keep in mind that the case of Loving v. Virginia wasn't heard by the Supreme Court until 2/3 of the states had already legalized inter-marriage. I don't think gay marriage advocates will have to wait to get to that 2/3 benchmark before testing a Supreme Court challenge, but it would be the safe bet to wait for a few more states to make the switch and for at least one of the conservative justices to be replaced by an Obama nominee.

Even liberals must feel that Cheney has been a good kind of Richard.

            Untrue

Cheney has long departed from conservative orthodoxy on the issue. He said during the 2000 presidential campaign that same-sex marriage should be left to the states, and he caused a small uproar during the 2004 race by appearing to distance himself from a proposed constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage, strongly supported by President George W. Bush.

                  Yep, ya got me...

I actually remembered at least one of those mentions, but chose to ignore it and go for the more gratifying and fun blanket false accusation, but you busted me!
