  • Tom Gill - Aloha & R.I.P.

    From the Honolulu Star-Bulletin:
    http://www.starbulletin.com/news/bre...Gill_dies.html

Former Hawaii Lt. Gov. Thomas Gill died this morning at Leahi Hospital after a long illness. He was 87.

Gill served one term in the U.S. House of Representatives in 1963-64 and was lieutenant governor from 1966 to 1970.

He also served in the territorial and state House of Representatives from 1958 through 1962...
Back in 1970, one of my neighbors was a big Tom Gill supporter. I wasn't old enough to vote yet, but I helped hold signs during Gill's gubernatorial campaign that year. Running against incumbent Gov. John A. Burns, Gill was the underdog, big time. As was expected, Gill lost that one.

Dan Boylan wrote a MidWeek column a few years ago, entitled: "What We Need is Another Tom Gill." His words rang true then, and still do today:

    An excerpt:
Gill stood for things - important things - like civil rights and equal economic opportunity. He warned his fellow citizens about the economic and environmental costs of over-development. He championed a rail mass transit system at a time when we might have been able to afford to build one.

Intellectually, Gill was usually two steps ahead of his colleagues in the profession of politics. That didn’t always sit well with them - or with the voters.

And Gill didn’t fudge his positions. He told you straight up where he stood - often too straight up for his own political good. He was one of the most impolitic politicians Hawaii has ever seen...
A concise summary of Tom Gill's accomplishments can be found at:

Long before John McCain started using the term, Tom Gill was the original "maverick" of Hawaii politics. Often referred to as "quixotic," Gill never shied away from fighting the good fight.

My heartfelt condolences go out to the Gill family. Tom Gill worked hard at making this world a better place for us all, and he left a legacy of which his family can be most proud.
To be, or musubi... What was da question?
