Oooh, I remember the Haleiwa Pony Farm! During Sunday family drives to Haleiwa, we kids would beg and wheedle and promise to be good FOREVER... and our parents would stop there on occasion.

The carnival rides and carousels were kind of "rackatooted" by then (meaning that they had seen better days), but we never cared about the mechanical stuff. We just wanted to ride the PONIES!

The family who owned the Pony Farm (somehow the name "Cannon" comes to mind?) used to see us often enough that they would let us ride on our own vs. being on a lead, as long as we didn't ride the ponies harder than a canter... no full-on galloping.

After the Pony Farm, we'd usually end up at Sea View Inn for dinner.
My favorite there was the shrimp tempura -- so ono!
To be, or musubi... What was da question?

The Sea View Inn double crust banana pie was the best! Sometimes we'd drive all the way to Haleiwa (haha...from Mokuleia!) just to get a pie. Years later, I found a similar pie being made at a small factory in Wahiawa, next to the pawnshop just by where Nito Lavarias' gym used to be.

My Dad, who grew up in Waialua, says that there used to be a place called 'Jerry's' near there that was THE place to take a date, back when.

The Sea View Inn! OMG. I can remember the Fujises taking me there for lunch...I was so hungry I ate two entrees. They were much too polite to say anything, but looking back I imagine they must have been thinking 'Don't the parents feed her?'

I think it was the shrimp tempura and the spaghetti.

I sent my mom a link to this thread, and this is what she emailed me about it...

Wow, how much I had forgotten!
There used to be a trail through a pasture, which led from Saddle City to Town and Country Stables. Roger James had leased the pasture, and he closed the trail, so nobody could get to T and C any more. He bought or leased a ranch across from Gordon Cran at Papapala Ranch on the Big Island. For some reason, I never could quite forgive him for doing that, even tho now he is long gone. And I'd better get over it!
Did I tell you, after Gordon died, Joaquin Joseph died, and then Charlie Aipia.

That was the only downside about Saddle City...not much access to trails (or the beach!). Later, when we were up at Palehua, we could get onto that whole trail system around Mauna Kapu and Palikea. It's behind locked gates, and now the only way you can get up there is to take one of the Nature Conservancy's organised hikes. Here's the forest:

My sister and I went on one a couple of years ago, and it really was excellent. Rare native species that I never realized still survived on Oahu. We saw Pueo, snails, and sandalwood saplings. And beautiful views across the Waianae mountains.

Amazing. And riding always seemed such a minority thing, on the island!

Re: What happened to Saddle City?

My mom wrote me this letter...time goes by and all of our history is dying off...

Today, I "worked" all day in a booth at the fair, it promotes the spaying and neutering of dogs and cats. The woman who runs this program is Fannie Pueo, and for some reason, we came to talk of all the cowboys who died this year, like Gordon Cran, Joaquin Josepf, Harry Mau, Charlie Aipia, and now, Bobby Komine. His wife is Sue, so he and Sue Cates must have got divorced and married each other. Do you remember, they were an item.
Fannie's uncle was Tuna Sampaio, he is also dead. Do you remember him?

Are there any Centaurs walking around? And Arnold S. doesn't count.
