  • Fiber optic service?

Why don't we have fiber optic service in Hawaii, anyway?

    Re: Fiber optic service?

    What kind fiber optics?

This seems to indicate that we have or had fiber optics in 2002:

This seems to indicate that we have it

But this indicates that we don't

huh. If we don't have it, it's probably the cost of establishing the connections over the ocean.

No, not the business-level stuff. I mean, why don't we have fiber optic internet service all the way to the consumer? I can get my residential internet service on cable modem, or on DSP, or on wireless, but I can't get fiber.

The Gas Company had fiber optic service right to the service pole.
Life is what you make of it...so please read the instructions carefully.

The only company offering residential FTTH (Fiber to the Home) is Sandwich Isles Communications. Who only currently serves DHHL homesteads. As far as I understand there is some homesteads that currently get this. The rest get ADSL + 2 (like Hawaiian Telcom offers).

                  Re: Fiber optic service?

Fiber to the premise is VERY expensive.

Cable can offer 10-30Mbps, and with the introduction of DOCSIS 3 can bump it up to 50+

HT can theoretically do 10+ without FTTP

Until things get more stable, and HT can make a billion dollar investment you won't be seeing FTTP anytime soon.

Why exactly do you want FIBER to your house anyway?

No particular reason. I was just asking why we didn't have it.

Sandwich Isles Communications is hoping to purchase HawTel and use the same low cost USDA RUS loans to improve HT's aging infrastructure. However I've gone into great detail on my blog why there is a lot of problems with this plan. For starters, these loans are only supposed fund infrastructure in areas with less than 5,000 in population. On top of that, SIC's doesn't have the regulatory clearances (They only can serve DHHL lands),and their financial and business plans are very questionable.

Yeah the SIC offer is very weak. First off if SIC has access to USDA RUS loans for HT infrastructure, then HT should have access to those loans as well. It would be illegal otherwise.

I think HT is on the right track to turn around the company, but like i mentioned before, they need a better business plan for their wireless unit. IP services and the building of a MPLS network is there other unit that seems to be on the right track.

HawTel believe it or not tried to apply for USF funding (which SIC is using to repay their USDA RUS loans). However Sandwich Isles,Pacific LightNet and Vermont,Maine and South Dakota voiced their opposition to their petition.

No worries. I just asked because I was curious. Thanks for the figures on the max speeds of the various technologies. I guess I can't blame my <10 Kbps connection on the cable itself.
