  • Sci-Fi Channel to SyFy

Seems that today the Sci-Fi Channel is now calling themselves SyFy.

I'm with you in this one. This whole deliberate-misspelling thing to seem "hipper" or something drives me insane. It's all rap culture-y. What does that have to do with Sci-fi??? Totally different demographic, I think...

Network officials also noted that, unlike the generic term "sci fi" which represents the entire science fiction genre, the term "Syfy" can be protected by trademark...
It's not about the customers, it's about the licensing revenue.

Reaction to the new name has been largely negative.

The rebranding was announced in March. It was quickly framed as an attempt to shed a geeky image, which of course enraged all the geeks that loved the network. There was an avalanche of negative fan response, but the network has tried to be responsive, even selectively engaging some of the chatter on Twitter. An AdAge blogger compared the rebranding to PepsiCo's "Tropicana" debacle, suggesting the new name would be shortlived given the outcry. But, it looks like they're sticking to their guns.

With its flagship show "Battlestar Galactica" off the air, it's clear SyFy needs to scramble to retain relevance (beyond what they're already doing, which is milking BSG for every cent with spinoffs and TV movies).

I'm not sure how adding reality programming and wrestling fits under the "sci-fi" category, but since they own SyFy as a brand, they can say it covers anything they want it to.

This new signature has two Y chromosomes.

I don't watch the channel anyway. Too busy playing records on my HyFy.

I don't have any problems with the spelling change of the network. I wasn't aware of the planned name change.

                        I think it's ridiculous.

But the fact that it makes sense makes it even more ridiculous.

                          Re: Sci-Fi Channel to SyFy

"Battlestar Galactica" was the pinnacle of their original series content. A lot of other first run programs they show seem to be second rate to me. Reality shows and wrestling programs are not what I consider "science fiction".
                          I'm still here. Are you?
