This was not unexpected, but losing such a media legend, fine American, and an all 'round nice guy like Walter is sad. He had a good life and helped make us better.

        He loved the sea.

        Blessed be.

This is extremely sad news for those of us who grew up during that era, when Cronkite deservedly earned the moniker "the most trusted man in America."
He was an avid sailor. I saw him at a couple of events, but never got to speak to him.
I always loved it when we'd turn on the news and they'd say "Walter Cronkite is on assignment." Few people knew that his boat was named Assignment.
Fair winds and following seas, Mr. Cronkite.
          .
          .

That's my story, and I'm sticking to it.

I just heard about this! I'm so sorry to hear he passed. I loved him when I a little kid. No matter what he was reporting, he was comforting somehow.

Walter Cronkite was so much part of the U.S. space programs and the man on the moon programs of the late 1960s. It is ironic that his death comes at the 40th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing which he covered.

              Aloha Walter, R.I.P.
              I'm still here. Are you?

Was Walter Cronkite the person to announce to the American people that President Kennedy had died?

oh my, you must be very young. and I don't mean to insult you with that remark. Yes, he was the one who made the announcement (with very genuine tears like all the rest of us) and who stayed on the air for 4 days, up until the funeral. His was the face of my news for all the major news events in my life for many years.

actually, I think it's appropriate. He was so much a part of that event.
