Re: Does this mean we get more homeless people?

Families have been sent to 24 states and five continents, mostly to Puerto Rico, Florida, Georgia and the Carolinas.
I didn't realize the Carolinas were such a popular destination for the homeless. It bothers me how many people on another forum I sometimes read have the attitude of, "I'm 19 and I've always wanted to move to Hawaii! I have two years retail experience, so I shouldn't have a problem getting a job, lol. And I have $3000 saved up!! And if things don't work out, well, what better place to be homeless??? LOL"

UGH! I always take the bait and feel the need to try and beat some sense into them. Hopefully it works.

Can't think of anything creative this time

The key line in that article is:

All it takes is for a relative to agree to take them in.
Gotta have some family to vouch for you where ever it is before you can get the free ride out of state.

This Bloomberg plan sounds similar to one that some Honolulu City Council member proposed, if I recall last January, to buy one-way air tickets and send Honolulu's homeless (who were not originally from Hawaii) either back to the state where they arrived Hawaii from or to a state where they would have relatives who would take them in, if they chose to go. Anyone know whatever happened to this idea?

What kind of verification process do they have? This qualification sounds like a CYA to me.

Re: Does this mean we get more homeless people?

From this report the program is voluntary and that there has to be family or a friend with a home at the other end so they can get stable.:

                  http://www.abcnews.go.com/GMA/story?id=8206940&page=1

And this one says they sometimes get set up for up to 4 months with rent:

                  http://www.nydailynews.com/money/200...utta_town.html

City officials said there were no limits on where a family can be sent; all it takes is for a relative to take them in when they arrive.

Once a family leaves, homeless services officials say they follow up to make sure they have arrived and are okay.

In rare cases, the family will be advanced up to four months' rent, a one-month security deposit, a furniture allowance and a broker's fee.

If that's what is truly happening, checking up to see if the homeless actually have a support system working before and after, I'm all for the program.

Can I speak up ? If I am off topic then just remove this.
I never had the squeeze put on me by homeless people and yet I worked with them, a lot of mornings on the Dole pineapple plantation. Sure, I often bought them a burger but never gave out money. Many were Bi-Polar and friendly souls once you got to talk to them.
The guys wearing the suits in Kuhio would often ask for a few dollars and they were the ones to mistrust.

I've said dis before. "There are catagories of the Homeless...da wat nuts, da nuts nuts, and da have nuts." Many are dual dignosis. Many refuse treatment and medications. There are those who know the system well and know where and how to live off benefits, free food, medical, etc. Those who hurt are the families who can't afford the rents or the diabled who can't speak out for help. I've seen people who work and living on the beach not by choice. The children suffer.

The Homeless exists and they are just like us ~ HUMANS.
