  • Advertiser violates copyright law

The Gannett Advertiser continues to steal Star-Bulletin creative content. For example:

These photographs were taken by Star-Bulletin photographer Warren Roll
They are credited to "Advertiser Library." That's because they have possession of paper prints. But they do not have reprint rights. I'd be suspicious of ANY image credited Advertiser Library.

The S-B better be sending a "cease-and-desist" letter and/or filing a lawsuit ASAP. Creative rights have to be defended to prevent being forfeited.

my union (SAG) and several other unions have been fighting to defend creative rights for y-e-a-r-s. Good luck to the SB, I hope they're successful.

        Just wondering out loud here.

Gannett, of course, was the former owner of the S-B for many years. When they sold that paper in 1993 in order to purchase the Advertiser, did Gannett retain any rights to those old archival photos as a part of whatever sales agreement they had with then S-B owner Liberty Newspapers?

Quick answer: no. Gannet sold the paper and all copyrights to a third party in 1993, including copyrights past. Also, Star-Bulletin union contract shared subsequent use rights between the newspaper and the photographer.

This sounds like one for the lawyers and nothing will be settled here.
            I'm still here. Are you?
