Obviously, Diane you have a first-rate sense of humor and an openness and honesty that's refreshing. Good luck.

I'll be missing Paul Drewes too, what an affable all around good guy.

      Hi, Diane.

I’ve been on the short end of a mass layoff (a national buyout), so I’m familiar with what you’re going through. A lot of my former co-workers (somehow you get closer to them because of hard times) viewed this as an opportunity. They took off in other directions, directions they’ve always wanted to take, but perhaps thought it was beyond them, and were, for the most part, successful. There is nothing wrong with freelancing. In fact, I think it’s a good idea. It keeps you in touch with where you were, but it also points to other possibilities. When something like this happens, there’s always a lot of re-assessment. Freelancing keeps all options open. It enables you to make a considered choice.

Hope everything works out for you.

My wife was asking where was Dash part of this week, I guessed that he had time off he needed to use or he would lose it, Diane confirmed it.

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't Dash the only one to work on-air at ALL the news stations in town??

As for AFTRA, remember the KITV strike in 1980 that lasted a few months, went from October to February as I recall. The reporters were on strike, the anchors were seperate union so they could work. So the 1980 national/local election was covered by Rockwell, Larry Price, Jack Hawkins and some scab reporters who also covered news like the press conference with Mark David Chapman's wife (John Lennon's killer) who lived in Honolulu.

Was this the last strike locally in television news?

Possible new site of combined news operation:
          » hawaiinewsnow.com

I respectfully submit this humorous observation: it looks like Hawaii New Snow.com. Like a snowfall monitoring service from atop Mauna Kea.

KHNL's website has taken down all the bios of on-air staff except for the remaining four:

I'm not really sweating how freelance "appears" and if I have glory days or not to come. If there's pocket change to be had, cool. If not, ok.

To be honest, my head's still spinning from the layoff. Just so much stress, etc - I need to unwind. I am not in a state to really think about putting up a website, getting together a reel, etc.

I definitely will set this aside and remember to re-read it and think about it in a few weeks when I'm back to a healthy place. THANKS for your good advice and tips, everyone.

I'm comfortable with what I've had and done, and where I've been. I don't know where I'm going. I'm not worried. I have faith something will materialize that will seem interesting to me and worthwhile. Aside from mourning, I'm in a good space.
I have enjoyed and appreciated your work for a long time. About 20 years ago, I was laid off when the company I worked for sold off their entire radio division. I wound up with an even better opportunity. I have no doubt the same thing will happen to you. You have talent, personality and versatility. Mahalo for the great job you have done for Hawaii television viewers.

She was clearly insolent, having mentally checked out any obligation to her coworkers. And with no ties or intention of returning to Hawaii, she didn't care what bridges she burned.
Thank you Diane for your honest response. I was once fired from a job myself, and at the time I felt like the worst thing that ever happened to me. In reality, it was actually the best thing that ever happened to me (disguised as the worst thing) because that lame job was holding me back to do something better. You probably have things you always wanted to do, and now is a great time to discover them. For me, I spent lots of days playing chess with the guys in Waikiki.

Me and my wife can totally see you being "Diane from Sleepland" or being the spokesperson for Hawaii Baby USA.

Put yourself in their shoes if you also have a job. If you are retired or are wealthy enough that you don't need to work this won't apply to you.

Actually, it was a little more than that. Jason said, "When I came here, I had only my wife but no family in Hawaii. Now I leave KHNL with LOTS of family." I'm paraphrasing 'cause he had a hard time getting it out, but that's what he was trying to say.

                      I think that's cry-worthy.

I'm not speaking ill of anyone because I don't know Tracy personally or the whole story...but generally speaking from my experience, in times of crisis people will show their true colors.

Glad to see Paul stepped up to the plate and helped a friend in need.

During the commerical, I would answer the phones, let in the guests outside, escort them to the set, and mic them. Then run back to the desk. She was sitting right there and stubbornly refused to help. It was ridiculous. She was on Facebook or on social calls to her friends in Chicago.

Our boss heard, and scolded her. In revenge, she simply called in sick for the last 2 days. I wish she'd been edited out of the goodbye video.

I'd have had to read a 2 hour show (the weather part would just be me reading over weather graphics prepared the night before by Sharie) alone, but Paul offered to come in. I didn't have to ask. He volunteered. He is a real friend.

When did I say crying was a bad thing. Brett Favre cries everytime he retires. I just thought it was strange that the guy was crying while Sharie Shima handle it like it was another broadcast.

I don't mean to pick on you, I have been reading a lot of comments on other forums (Honolulu Advertiser, Star Bulletin, etc) and how people are watching this "soap opera" play out.

When someone speaks so casually about someone's career coming to an end it sorta gets to me.

Forgive me for being overly sensitive....but again I ask-- how would YOU react if/when that day ever arrived?
