If I have missed them already let me know, but has Blangiardi done any editorials yet? Fink's style and delivery during his editorals have been criticized by many, but he was required to do it as all Raycom GM's are supposed to.

I don't know if it was a FCC requirement then, but during the 70's all the stations Owners and/or GM's did editorials, i.e. Heftel (KGMB), Bob Berger, Dick Grimm (KHVH/KITV), Duane Harm, George Hagar (KHON), etc.

I don't have problems with editorials as long as they are brief and cuts to the point, one's that drag on and on as they did back then could help cure insomnia.

I haven't seen Blangiardi do one yet either. But Fink is still doing them over on K5. Saw one about a week ago. I don't mind editorials at all if they're done well. Back when I lived in D.C., the anchor of the NBC affiliate, Jim Vance, would periodically do editorials when an issue he cared about arose. Vance would pull no punches and deliberately step on the toes of the TPTB, who richly deserved to have their noses tweaked in public. Vance caught lots of flack, but never backed down or apologized. I loved his editorials because I almost always agreed with them. They were a joy to behold! I don't miss D.C. one bit, but I do miss Jim Vance!
No, I'm not the Larry Price, I just happen to have the same name.

Maybe the editorials have to be done within the first month, so there is time.

Sorry to go off-topic but you mention Jim Vance, longtime WRC (NBC) Washington DC news anchor, when he and sports anchor George Michael lose it on-air, it is one of the funniest news clips I've ever seen:

While at WJLA I experienced a lot from them, but Nance is acknowledged as one of the best anchors in our nation's capital.

Correcting myself: Jim (V)ance, not Nance! Of course Jim Nance is the well known CBS sports announcer, but not WRC news anchor! That is Jim VANCE.

    Ref Editorials:
I think the Heftel commentaries were more ego-generated, or perhaps part of a long-range plan to further Heftel political ambitions. It got his face out there, and he DID go on to serve in Congress for ten? years and then ran unsuccessfully for gov. Berger and Heftel had a great rivalry going, and that may be why HE jumped into the game. Just an observation.

Here are some "NOW" (as in HAWAII NEWS NOW) mainland station branding examples...

KHQ, the NBC affiliate in Spokane, WA brands itself as:

    "KHQ6 RIGHT NOW"

    http://www.khq.com/

Or in San Diego, the NBC affiliate, KNSD is:

SD News Now (San Diego News Now)

    http://www.nbcsandiego.com/brchannel/SD_NEWS_NOW.html

    In Salt Lake City, Fox13Now:

    http://www.fox13now.com/

KATV, ABC affiliate in Little Rock, AR:

    http://www.katv.com/katvnewsnow.html

So the concept being used NOW, pardon the pun is not new or uncommon at all.

That clip is priceless! When Vance and Michael get each other going, it's hilarious. They've been doing that to each other for something like 20 years now! Thanks for posting the link.

And from Ian Lind's blog, On December 2nd, Media Council Hawaii will host a public forum to weigh in on the issue:

According to the second item in this column http://www.hsblinks.com/1a2 ... you MAY get a signal this week, given the FCC grant of a Dec. 2008 application filed by Raycom for the station that WAS KFVE.

So, is it safe to assume they'll be beaming the signal from Oahu to Maui's Ulupalakua transmission antenna so I, from Molokai, can watch KGMB9 clearly?

Sighs. Can anyone care to explain to me ... AGAIN ... why the two stations HAVE to swap channels/frequencies?

After a while, I finally figured out what the best job in broadcast news is:

Not News Director, not Lead Anchor, not top investigative reporter, not even General Mgr.....

It's the all powerful, all knowing Consultant.

Hell, yes. Research Frank N. Magid Associates - they used to be a big employer in my old hometown, and every broadcaster would get a little woozy whenever we passed by their office.

    Lol!

I remember one who was saying what a great gig he had, he got to travel all over the place on someone else's dime.

After he left I thought to myself, basically his job is to tell people what to do.

Then he gets out of dodge till he reaches the next town, rinse...repeat.

It's even better than that. He's not held accountable for failure even if his advice is wrong. Nope. That's an execution problem.

(This is an equal-opportunity canard. Female consultants equally culpable. Robots too.)

Yes I agree, but if you keep dishing out bad advice I think it would eventually catch up with you. And because of this your respect and reputation might suffer too.

The consultant can always fall back on the excuse that, "It wasn't my advice that was bad, it was the poor execution of the plan by the station staff."

A consultant is someone of whom you ask the time, and he/she looks at YOUR watch and tells you.

By the way ABC's overnight news program has been called "World News Now" since the early 1990's.

Very true. I was going to say that, but stuck to the individual station markets instead.

The Magid guy at 9 way back when was instrumental in bringing in the boy news director on whose watch Bob Sevey got fed up and quit.

Hard to believe that Frank Magid, a college professor who taught statistics, anthropology and sociology would create a powerful consulting business that has been around for 50 years. His son runs the company now.

Harry Kovsky is another media consultant that has been around for YEARS.

It's always nice to listen to and seek out ways to improve your product but after all of that occurs, the best thing to do always is go with your gut feeling. I was taught that years ago and I didn't have to pay for that advice.

The latest from Erika Engle on the ongoing SSA issue.

    http://bit.ly/2dmNQ9

Media Council Hawaii, which is fighting the deal before the Federal Communications Commission and has met with the U.S. Justice Department on alleged antitrust ramifications, also might involve some more federal alphabet soup.

"We're definitely going to be looking at the FTC (Federal Trade Commission) as another place to bring this whole issue," said President Chris Conybeare.

In the meantime, it plans a Dec. 2 forum in conjunction with its annual meeting titled "Save Local Television, Stop Big Media," from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.....
    I'm still here. Are you?
