    Not according to this from the industry. Good article! Hooves are made of keratin and cannot be used to make gelatin.

    I love me some Jello and gummy worms and bears and all the other gelatin-containing "stuff".

    I'm glad to know the same people who provide me the crunchy pork skins are not wasting the rest of Mr. Pig! I hate waste.

    Back to the realm of on-topic. Barry, so the answer was that you bought strawberry jam for dessert, right? Yum.

      MIncemeat is very good and is a traditional Thanksgiving pie treat. It just tastes like a raisin flavored "filling" that makes really great pies. Most no longer make the traditional version, with real suet because it is hard to find the ingredients. I use a mincemeat that comes in a jar at the supermarket. I've never really checked but I doubt it contains traditional suet.

          Somehow the plot has been lost and gone on to mince pies. The thread I started was about a vegie stew which I made in Honolulu for my friend.
          I made dumplings and some went into the stew (at the time I never realised that suet in the dumplings contained meat fat,)
          We had steamed dumplings and Jam for afters.

          Very fattening, but you Hawaiin girls need fattening up.

              I think I'll look for the mincemeat in a jar, just to taste. If we like it, I might try and make some. It looks like something my husband would like.

                No No ! Quorn is a meat substitute and often we use that in cooking. I buy it in packets which look like minced beef > Not that sweet stuff in a jar.
                Mind you ! The sweet mincemeat in a jar is great fror cakes and curries. I always add a spoon of marmalade to the curry. Recipe to follow for beef curry.

                  Put a dab of mincemeat onto a wonton wrapper, fold, and deep fry. Sprinkle with powdered sugar.

                      Put a bit of mincemeat into an apple pie or a crumble before baking.

                      Fold mincemeat into softened vanilla ice cream.

                      Slice a banana lengthwise into four long quarters, soak for a bit in honey. Wrap the banana and a tab of mincemeat into a lumpia wrapper and fry.

                      Make small mincemeat tarts without the top crust, substitute the top crust with meringue and bake til the topping is hard and crunchy.

                        I have my grandmother's recipe - I would never dream of making it from scratch! Too much work. I buy it in a jar and am quite happy with the taste. The brand is "NoneSuch" and I can usually find at Foodland just before Thanksgiving.

                        Barry - it was your mention of suet that got us off on this tangent. So, back to the stew discussion........................
