    Exclamation Re: Jay Leno Show

It's official -- NBC announced the changes. And according to the NBC exec, Leno will go back to the Tonight show!!!!!!!!!! :

NBC host Jay Leno is going back to late nights after a low-rated experiment in prime time, the network announced Sunday.
Leno's prime-time talk show, which debuted in September, "didn't meet affiliates' needs," said Jeff Gaspin, chairman of NBC Universal Television Entertainment.
The program will go off the air February 12, when the 2010 Winter Olympics begin.
The network is now negotiating with Leno and its current late-night hosts, Conan O'Brien and Jimmy Fallon, to decide who ends up with which time slot, Gaspin said.
The goal is to keep all three hosts, but nothing was a done deal as of Sunday, he said.
O'Brien took over NBC's flagship "Tonight Show" when Leno moved to the 10 p.m. slot in September. Fallon took over O'Brien's former show, "Late Night." Gaspin said the new plan is for Leno to take over a shortened "Tonight Show," with O'Brien moving back to "Late Night" at midnight and Fallon hosting a new show at 1 a.m.

I hope Conan goes nuts and rips the network every night. He's got to be PO'd! If this doesn't light a fire under his butt to turn the irreverent comedy torch on them full blast for some great viewing, nothing will.

I havn't watched either of their new slotted shows, but the reviews have been bad. Is NBC really this stupid? It was all good before, why'd they try to fix what wasn't broke? And Leno's show was doing good for whatever it is that came after him, so where's the beef?

CNN changed their story now, and it no longer says that Leno will take the Tonight Show back. At least, not right now. Conan has to make a decision in the next couple of days.
At the moment the plan is for Leno to go back to 11:30 (10:30 here), with Conan at 12:00 or 12:30.
Conan is only getting about half the viewers that Letterman gets, so... [/shrug]

Is this going get ugly between Jay Leno and Conan O'Brien? Has Leno and Letterman ever talked to each other after Leno got the Tonight Show?

NBC is a bigger mess now, and if Seinfeld's new venture doesn't pan out they'll be sinking big time.

So --- you think it was wise for Leno to have Jimmy Kimmel on?

I watched and posted it a few days ago because it was sed Jay was visibly flustered by Jimmy's remarks. Not. He knew what he was setting himself up for and handled it well. The last, and most damning remark, got obscured as the skit ended so it didn't come off nearly as bad should had it been clearer.

Now..., when will he have Conan on?

Hilary Clinton and Sarah Palin appeared on SNL and made fun of themselves. I think their likeabilty went up with self-deprecating humor.

A surprising thing that came out is that Leno does not have a manager or an agent. He handles things himself.
No wonder he can afford all those cars!

I heard him mention that on his show last night. That is truly amazing in the entertainment industry. He's either a very astute businessman or an overly frugal control freak! My guess is it's the former. I've never heard any negative scuttlebutt about him over the years.

Likewise, I've never heard anything negative about Leno. Letterman is famous for being a tyrant to his staff, and even Johnny Carson was a bit of a tyrant.
Speaking of staff... I was shocked to hear that Conan had a staff of 200. What the heck do they all do? I mean, I can see a huge staff for a sitcom or a drama, with set changes, location shoots, etc etc etc. But talk shows have a single fixed set, fixed lighting, sound, etc etc. Nothing really changes. I would've thought a staff of perhaps 30 or 40, including staff to handle booking guests and such. But 200?!??

I thought I recalled that, for a period of time, his wife Mavis handled some of his management duties. Now, SHE is an amazing force to be reckoned with - do some 'net research and find out how politically influential she has been over the years.

It would be helpful to know the size of the other late night shows' staffs. And the size of Leno's staff when he was at the helm of TTS. Without those numbers I can only hypothesize.

In Leno's case he is the production company...Big Dog Productions. In this case he could have many employees in the office with many different job descriptions just as other non-entertainment related corporations might have. Then there's the staff that's specific to the entertainment industry. Still, 200 for O'Brien seems a bit excessive but since I'm not all that familiar with TV in general and late night talk shows in particular, I could be very wrong.

Conan's Late Night show was either co-produced or produced by his production company, Conaco. A production company requires a large staff and Conaco was producing shows other than Late Night. I have no idea if O'Brien entered into a similar agreement with NBC/TTS as Leno/Big Dog had. If so, that would justify a larger than normal staff than if NBC was the production company employing the staff and all Jay or Conan had to do was show up for work and get a hefty, weekly payroll check!!!

I remember when Arsenio Hall had his show he discussed his financial arrangement with a guest. He received 3 checks each month...one for being the exec. producer...one for writing...one for hosting. He indicated that pay days were always a time of joy! IIRC, he had a prod. co., too, so, if that's the case, he was actually paying himself those 3 checks. I could go on and on about the advantages (and disadvantages) of owning the production company but I'm beginning to bore myself!

If Conan's staff of 200 was to share equally in the $12M severance package (I doubt that they will) they'd each receive $60,000. That should be enough to tie many of them over 'til the next show. Should that happen in Sept. it would probably need to go into pre-production fairly quick. My guess is he negotiated a deal that would enable him to keep as many of his people as possible. If that's the case, ratings aside, I commend him for his loyalty.

I'd love to know the size of Oprah's staff!

Leno supposedly has about 150 on staff, Tutu. But probably 100 of those are working in his garage.
As for Conan's future, ABC has already said they have no interest, and FOX is allegedly on the fence. Maybe Conan will go back to writing for SNL.

Will the jokes at each other go into next week? I don't know if Dave is going overboard with the Jay Leno jokes, but his whole monologue is about Leno. I like Letterman's show of the three, but he's going to sound like a bitter old guy.

Wow...really? While I haven't heard there's a contract waiting for him to sign, I have heard that FOX is very interested, that they've been looking for a late night show and that Conan fits right in...plus Conan has friends in high places at FOX! That's been the subject of chatter on several shows, not any inside info I have.

Letterman likes to overkill comedy bits. His Jay Leno jokes are funny. But, the jokes about current events suffers because those aren't as funny and it ruins the rhythm.

Jeez, I sure hope so! With or without Eubanks. I'd love to see the female percussionist/vocalist take over. Dayam...that lady can sing. Or, possibly, Smitty!

    I'd rather Conan hire her.

    Talking Re: Jay Leno Show

I just saw a commercial on the tube. Jay Leno was driving a racing Cobra on Pacific Coast Highway. There was a large 10 on the side of the car, and the wind blew it off and revealed 11:30 under it.
In the background the Beatles were singing "Get back... get back... get back to where you once belonged."
    Great commercial!!!

What's the deal with FOX being on only 2 hours of prime time, couldnt they put Conan on at 9pm or 10pm in certain markets where the prime time is from 8pm-11pm?
