Interesting compilation done by the House Chief Clerk's office. Didn't know that Diana Hansen was in the House. Lots of interesting names.http://www.capitol.hawaii.gov/sessio.../statehood.pdf

Well, that's half the legislature. What about the state senators?

Starting from 1959 this page has a membership roster of every legislator up to the present. Just click on the tiny year links at the top.

        Thanks for the link, Mel!

Scanning through the list conjures up memories. Some lawmakers have had their reputations damaged through scandals. Others have been associated with bizarre events. To name a few:

Elmer Carvalho - Speaker of the House. Perhaps the single, most powerful and influential legislator this State has ever seen. Went on to become Maui Mayor and was frequently touted as a strong gubernatorial prospect. Then he suddenly resigned the mayorship less than a year after getting re-elected in 1978, with no explanation ever given.

Larry Kuriyama - State Senator. Very popular legislator in his district. Gunned down in his own garage just weeks after winning his primary election contest. Turned out that he was the target of the local mafia.

Danny Kihano - Speaker of the House. Sent to prison for campaign fund abuse and money laundering.

Milton Holt - State Senator. Started off with so much promise. Very popular with both constituents and fellow lawmakers. Could have been Senate President and maybe, even Governor if he played his cards right. But everything went terribly awry. Spousal abuse, campaign fund abuse, drug abuse.

Sen. Chip Uwaine & Rep. Gene Albano. Both of them brought down by conspiracy charges in connection with the 1982 voter fraud scandal.

Roland Kotani - State Rep. Killed by his wife shortly after telling her he wanted a divorce. As his wife was being booked, she committed suicide in the police station bathroom.

Steve Cobb - State Senator. Arrested for propositioning a transexual prostitute. (Icck!!!) Was able to serve out the remaining years of his final term, but was stripped of his committee chairmanship and leadership powers within the Democratic caucus.

Jimmy Aki - Senate President. Lost his Senate presidency for ethics violations. Then was voted out of office altogether after more criminal charges (gambling, racketeering) were filed against him.

Karen Horita - State Rep. Arrested for DUI. Situation became much worse when her friend (an HPD employee) tried to conceal that arrest in the police media log.... which was days before the Democratic Primary election. The scandal was eventually revealed and Horita ended up losing her bid for a State Senate seat.

Sen. Marshall Ige & Rep. Nate Suzuki. Both nabbed on tax fraud in '02.

Galen Fox - State Rep. Resigned in disgrace after fondling a woman sleeping next to him on a plane.

And of course, there are the folks whose reputations were in tatters after they left the legislature, such as:

Senate President Dickie Wong and House Speaker Henry Peters, both of them caught up in serious legal troubles and eventually forced out as Bishop Estate trustees.

State Rep. Richard Garcia was imprisoned after being implicated in a ponzi scheme.

State Rep. Hiram Fong Jr. frittered away his father's vast fortune in failed business ventures and ended up owing millions to creditors.
