    Default KITV 4 News

This will be a new thread to use for commenting on the Channel 4 News at KITV.

KITV 4's 10 pm news had a major computer meltdown tonight. Paula read short headlines, and Justin did the weather & then the station went to Seinfeld.

I wonder what kind of computer problem could have brought down an entire newsroom? (Paula said Justin's weather report is on a different system.)

    Must be Microsoft related.

Needless to say, the abbreviated newscast lasted about 5 minutes with no graphics or film to run.

So last night the news choices at 10pm were KHON and Hawaii News Now on two stations.

I'm sure whatever tech problems will be fixed at KITV soon.

Our Cisco core switch failed at 9:53pm last night and basically made the staiton 'brain dead"...all connectivity to all our servers went down. There are two "supervisors" in the Cisco switch and it's supposed to go to backup mode but did not. We had the same problem again this morning but no loss of air. We are awaiting delivery this morning of a "supervisor" to replace what we think is the issue.

I've started watching the KITV 10pm news since the KGMB switchover. I like Paula Akana and the KGMB picture quality has gone down. It will interesting to see what all they include in a 1hr broadcast.

I like KITV's late news expansion. I think Paula Akana probably needs a co-anchor.

If they started this thing at 9:30 or even 9:00, I'd be all over it. I gave it a shot last night (and may stick with it for a week or so) and it was decent. I'm not sure I got very much more news than in what would have been a half-hour broadcast.

With all due respect, I was a bit disappointed in the story about the State Auditor calling for Ted Liu to step down.

Years ago this would have been a top story with a full report.

On the 6pm show I saw it buried midway in the newscast with a vosot.

It basically left me even more confused than ever, with the incredible lack of information....especially about the audit itself.

Will KITV use it's expanded, 1-hour 10pm newscast to expand on what appears to be a truly hard-news and important story?

I'll be watching the 10pm show to find out...

Ax falling - announcement out today:
Gary Sprinkle, news anchor and reporter at KITV4 Island Television News announced that he will leave the station effective at the end of this year. "I'm not retiring, just scaling back," Sprinkle said. "I'll take a little time to do the things I haven't been able to do for the past 32 years."

KITV President and General Manager Mike Rosenberg said, "Gary has been a valued member of the KITV family and news team for the past 18 years, though we will miss him, we respect his decision to step away at this time."

Pamela Young, Sprinkle's co-anchor and wife, has also decided to scale back her schedule and will take on a new role as weekend anchor at KITV. "Co-anchoring with Pamela has been wonderful. We are delighted to have spent the majority of those years as the top-rated newscast at 5 o'clock," Sprinkle said.

As KITV prepares for the transition at the end of the year, the station will immediately begin a national search for a weeknight anchor to join the news team. Paula Akana, who currently anchors KITV Island Television News at 10 P.M., will expand her role at 5 P.M. and 6 P.M. during the transition.

Much respect to Pamela and Gary, too. Two consumate professionals.

    Self-pruning?

Both Sprinkles have been at KITV for a long time, and presumably are making top dollar at the station. Their contracts were due to expire at the end of the year, so perhaps there is/was a "handwriting on the wall" aspect to Gary's departure, no matter how nicey-nicey the language in the announcement is.

Today (Wednesday) is the last day of the rating period for November, and The Numbers will be out maybe second week of December. Check back to see if the husband-and-wife duo made a difference in the stations 6 p.m. (main show) audience. They were number one at 5 p.m., but that might not necessarily translate to similar success at 6.

Perhaps 'ax falling' is a little harsh, but . . .

Check out Erika's column today, including this:

    (...)
"Sprinkle has worked in TV news for 32 years, beginning in Tucson, Ariz.
"A little-known fact is that his father, Art Sprinkle Jr., hired the late, legendary news anchor Bob Sevey at then-KULA-TV (now KITV) in the 1950s as a production manager. After his transition to news, Sevey hired Sprinkle's son Gary at KGMB in 1978 as a weekend sports anchor.
"Sprinkle and Young, then the "Mixed Plate" reporter at KHON-TV, got married in 1985, and by 1991 both were anchoring the new 5 p.m. newscast at KITV, a slot in which they were top-rated for most of the years since."
    (...)

I've had the pleasure of spending time with Gary and Pam at many social events and always found them to be extremely nice folks. I wish them well in the future.
Also, someone elsewhere suggested replacing them with Howard Dashefsky and Diane Ako. From Diane's writings here on HT I got the impression that she wouldn't be interested, but I hope she reconsiders!

There's also Stacey Loe as a possible contender.

I think it was mentioned in the KGMB thread there is a non-compete clause in her current contract.

Perhaps a year out, but by then I am sure KITV will have their new anchors in place.

Sad to hear that Gary and Pam are breaking up on the news set. I mean who is going to do "Pets on Set" without them?

Loe unlikely after KGMBs departure news release gushed over her professed wish to be 'a full-time mom...'

And if she did want to go for it, might there not be non-compete hoops to jump through?

It's not a good idea for a newscaster to expand especially with Hi-Def.

I'm watching the 5pm news today and only noticed that Paul Drewes is now with KITV. Glad to know that he has found another position.

Oh, man. Positively the most blatant sweeps hook ever attempted by a local station, and (apparently, since it's been repeated every six months) a very successful one.

I hated it, not because I don't like cute puppies and kitties, but because it was so damned obvious and had so little news value. At least Gary's underwater excursions and Pam's travels showed me something educational.

I see what you mean, but it's a concept many stations used and have used for 25 plus years in other markets, though I admit most of the time I have seen it seems to be on the morning programs on the mainland. In Phoenix they did it almost every single day and it drove me nuts too.
