What do you think of the list?
Obviously compiled by someone with a big-time affinity for 1960s and '70s music.

There's some '50s and '80s material on there. Then comes a big dropoff. Looks like only about a couple dozen songs in total for the '90s and '00s.

The Supremes are on there. Look again.

472 Where Did Our Love Go Diana Ross
And while there's none of Sting's solo material, there are a couple of Police songs in there.

I have this playlist and play it quite often. It's great for family BBQs minus a few songs.

I don't know if they're bias with their number one and number two songs.

1 Like A Rolling Stone Bob Dylan
          2 Satisfaction Rolling Stones

            2 Satisfaction Rolling Stones
Actually, if Rolling Stone (the magazine) was using this list to self-promote, the song to do so would be Dr. Hook's The Cover of the Rolling Stone.

Well, there goes any shred of legitimacy for that list.

                  Re: Rolling Stone top 500

I think greatness is something that needs to be time-tested, which would explain the dearth of 90s and 2000s songs. The Stone loves Dylan and Springsteen, and it hates Billy Joel. I love its lists because they're always good for launching discussions of my favorite subject.

It published a list with the same name several years ago. I've got that issue and look forward to digging it up and comparing.

It's tough to find much fault with the upper half of the list, but "Stairway to Heaven" at 31 is RIDICULOUS. I have a problem with any such list that doesn't put it in the top five. I personally believe it belongs at number 1. And "Hotel California" at 49? What the heck? That's number 2 on my list. And "The Boys are Back in Town" belongs in the top 20 at WORST.

There's no Styx, Journey, REO Speedwagon, Rush, Van Halen, or Kansas (I'm a child of the 80s so these are bands I look for), but Foreigner's "I Want to Know What Love Is," that band's WORST SONG EVER makes the cut. Ugh.

"Bitter Sweet Symphony" makes the cut. I think that's kind of cool.

Other songs that I think should have made the cut but didn't:
"Signs" by Five Man Electrical Band
                  "Come Sail Away" by Styx
"Roll with the Changes" by REO Speedwagon
                  "Roundabout" by Yes
"Shadows of the Night" by Pat Benatar
"Magic Man" "Crazy on You" and "Barracuda" by Heart
"Point of Know Return" and "Carry On Wayward Son" by Kansas
"Been Caught Stealing" by Jane's Addiction
                  "Jeremy" by Pearl Jam
                  "Tusk" by Fleetwood Mac
"Wasted on the Way" and "Our House" by Crosby, Stills, and Nash
"Straight Outta Compton" (instead of "F*** tha Police") by NWA
"Cat Scratch Fever" by Ted Nugent
"You've Got a Friend" by James Taylor
                  "Crazy" by Gnarls Barkley
                  "Black Betty" by Ram Jam
"Eve of Destruction" by Barry McGuire
But I'm disturbed! I'm depressed! I'm inadequate! I GOT IT ALL! (George Costanza)

                    Re: Rolling Stone top 500

One thing is that song number 250 is missing from the list. Anyone know what song that is? I don't.

All kidding aside regarding "Disco Duck", I think anyone can think of a multitude of songs that should be on that top 500. I agree with Bob's and Scrivener's list of missing songs. Here are a few more that I'll add. To me these songs have also stood the test of time and for the few in the current century may do as time goes on.

Moody Blues - Nights in White Satin
                    Moody Blues - Tuesday Afternoon

Band on the Run - Paul McCartney & Wings
Mull of Kintyre - Paul McCartney & Wings

Money For Nothing - Dire Straits
Sultans of Swing - Dire Straits
Tunnel of Love - Dire Straits

Led Zeppelin - Hey Hey What Can I Do

Boat on a River - Styx

Duke of Earl - Gene Chandler

                    Daniel - Elton John

Dust in the Wind - Kansas

What I Like About You - The Romantics
