  • Was Capt. Cook the first?

Were there others that preceded Cook to 'discover' these islands for the Western/European known worlds of civilization?
An interesting ameteur historian's article concerning this was published in our local paper last month. I couldn't find it on-line til now.

Please forgive for being wide on this topic but the History Channel had a recent show on who discovered America, as in who got here before Columbus. It was a long list including of course the Norsemen but also Chinese, Hebrews, and Polynesians. It was said by one researcher that it was 99.9 % certain theat Polynesians had reached South America and probably North America as well. I guess in a thousand years or 10,000 years a lot of things that we take as commonplace will be as mysterious to the people of the future as ancient voyages now are to us.

I wonder if mitochondrial DNA would show that Montezuma was a bruddah...
