They just flashed a CIVIL EMERGENCY on TV for most islands of Hawaii, effective from 6:38pm to 9:38pm. It didn't say for what reason. Anyone know?

OK, I just got off the phone with HPD at the Waikiki substation, and the officer told me it was in fact due to that earthquake on the Big Island you mentioned. But he said according to their civil defense bulletin that a tsunami was NOT generated, so it's all clear.
I wish they'd give the all clear on TV!
What's weird is the officer wasn't even aware of this CIVIL EMERGENCY ticker on TV, and actually had to put me on hold to find out what's the scoops. That alone is kinda' scary!
5.0 and it indicates a tsunami...I think! I don't understand that page at all!!!
This is the latest bulletin from NOAA's Pacific Tsunami Warning Center:
TSUNAMI SEISMIC INFORMATION STATEMENT NUMBER 1
NWS PACIFIC TSUNAMI WARNING CENTER EWA BEACH HI
634 PM HST MON MAR 08 2010
TO - CIVIL DEFENSE IN THE STATE OF HAWAII
SUBJECT - LOCAL TSUNAMI INFORMATION
THIS STATEMENT IS FOR INFORMATION ONLY. NO ACTION REQUIRED.
AN EARTHQUAKE HAS OCCURRED WITH THESE PRELIMINARY PARAMETERS
ORIGIN TIME - 0630 PM HST 08 MAR 2010
COORDINATES - 19.9 NORTH 155.4 WEST
LOCATION - IN THE HAMAKUA COAST REGION OF THE BIG ISLAND
MAGNITUDE - 5.0
EVALUATION
NO TSUNAMI IS EXPECTED. REPEAT. NO TSUNAMI IS EXPECTED.
HOWEVER...SOME AREAS MAY HAVE EXPERIENCED SHAKING.
THIS WILL BE THE ONLY STATEMENT ISSUED FOR THIS EVENT UNLESS
ADDITIONAL DATA ARE RECEIVED.
Sheesh, where are the authorities and media getting their information from!?
Now the Advertiser finally posted a bulletin, saying it was a 4.4 quake....
A 4.4 magnitude earthquake shook Big Island residents at 6:30 p.m. Monday. It was felt by island residents, but no tsunami was generated.
I'll stick with NOAA's statements over the news media. Or should I?![]()
Damn, plates be wildn'!

TATT, the earthquakes that occur in Hawaii aren't generated by slipping or clashing tectonic plates, but strictly by volcanic activity.
The Hawaiian Islands are SMACK in the middle of one giant Pacific plate, with an active volcano that's kinda' like a stubborn pimple that never goes away.
Right on, you are right. I always forget about the moving over the hot spot that has created the amazing island chain of HI.
At any rate, with the tectonic activity that seems to be going on all over the place, in such a short period of time, has to make one think(I am not a doomsdayer). A little nudge from one corner of the earth seems to be trickling, down/over, a bit... too much for me to get into to try and explain my thoughts...not that it even matters. I need to not beverage pre-posting.

Now run along and play, but don’t get into trouble.
So much hysteria over a measly 4.4 earthquake. In California, that's just a reminder to roll over in bed. Please go back to the Chilling Out and Hanging Loose that Hawaii is supposed to be known for.
That is the great thing about HT: if you are uninterested in a thread, you can just not read it. Meanwhile, I can understand why the interest in a quake in Hawaii, there is a history of damage such as from the 2006 6.7 quake. And only a week ago was a major evacuation due to a potential tsunami caused by an earthquake elsewhere.
Hysteria? Hardly.
Interest? Certainly.
Now run along and play, but don’t get into trouble.
And the great thing about threads is the author's opinion is allowed to be posted in response to it, even if no one else agrees with it. Nowhere did I say this was a thread that I wasn't interested in.
I missed the 2006 quake. The last 6+ I had was in 1994. We lost our house then... but that's okay, because without that event, we wouldn't be in the better one we have today.![]()

I must have been watching the wrong TV shows. I didn't know there was an earthquake until this morning when I checked the SB and Advertiser sites, and HT.
There was NO hysteria. The only concern I'm aware of came from the ridiculously poor audio during the civil defense crawl on tv. We couldn't tell if the earthquake generated a tsunami...you know...that thing that caused a tsunami warning, street shutdowns and evacuations less than 10 days ago. A tsunami generated off the BI hits all the islands very quickly. No luxury of time such as the tsunami generated from the Chilean earthquake. Hysteria? I don't think so.
Beijing 8-08-08 to 8-24-08
Tiananmen Square 4-15-89 to 6-04-89
Down the page it also has another earthquake, I think 3/9/10 04:29 is 3/8/10 18:28 here, but it's rated 4.4 rather than 5.0.

So you're saying Hawaii's earthquakes are caused by Plate Tectonics, and not strictly by Volcanic eruptions and activity?
If so, I think you're wrong on that one. Then again, it's has been a while since I've been in a Geology classroom. Perhaps this is a good explanation of the dynamics and causes of earthquakes.
Well, more specifically, I am saying that volcanic activity is caused by plate tectonics.
The Pacific Plate is moving northwest relative to the plate that holds North America, and relative to hot spots coming up through the mantle from below the plates. Without the movement of plates along the earth's crust, you wouldn't get the magma that rises in volcanoes.
But I think what you are pointing out is that, unlike many of the world's islands, Hawai'i is NOT caused by either spreading centers (e.g., Iceland) or subduction zones (e.g., the Aleutians).
