I usually give it an extra week after the expiration dates to eat those foods. I was surprised in the article about how long eggs can keep. I'll probably still do the one week because of recent eggs recall.

I haven't brought milk for a long time but when I did I tend to use it up before the expiration date. I do notice for milk there is a taste difference the day before the expiration date.

I don't really count on expiration dates...but if my honey leaves the mayonnaise jar out on the counter for 8 hrs, I throw it away.

I use my senses instead of counting on being told what to do.

Will you still eat those after passing the expiration date?

I eat canned food years beyond the expiration dates. Other packaged foods, I've exceeded a year beyond on a regular basis. Hardly ever finish a gallon of milk before expiration. Cheeses, they usually just get stronger flavored (and when I freeze 'em, I simply disregard the date altogether). I just use the standard tests:

Look test - Looks good, taste it; looks bad, toss it.

You may remember Grocery Outlet, formerly in the space now occupied by Chuck E Cheese in City Square on Dillingham Blvd.. They sold groceries that were either closeouts (no longer in production) or near their expiration date at super cheap prices. The canned and bottled goods and some frozen stuff was still good, but the packaged chips and cookies were usually kinda' stale tasting.

I boil the eggs when they pass their expiration date. So, you can see if the eggs float or sink.

I would only eat an unrefrigerated egg if I can see it coming out fresh from the maker.
