  • Hemp - the new sugar

I noticed nothing in the recent Star-Ad pronouncement by Abercrombie of his immediate plans/goals for Hawaii that had any hint that of all people, a 'pot acquainted' sitting Govr. might push for the one win-win-win solution to our economic woes. These islands could again have $$$ waving in the breeze, this time in the form of industrial hemp, as the prospective ventures and entrepreneur opportunities are endless. And we have the land/climate/community history to absorb the tech of the past and future to transform these islands into a focused machine like sugar and pineapple once did. It's the eco-boom just waiting to happen for us, just like it could have for Haiti.

Not hearing a hint of true vision in his plans was disappointing, especially after he was so unconvincing while litterally running away from the direct question I posed of his thots on hemps chances, "I'm on it, I have two shirts made of it!", as he vanished.

Industrial hemp? If it's such a great crop, why do you imagine world production has been decreasing for over 100 years? Another question - how are those federal agents supposed to differentiate the industrial hemp from the potent hemp? On the one hand you can grow a $2 plant, on the other a $1000 plant. Why settle for $2?

      Whoa, too far out, man...

Hey man, check it out... http://www.sdearthtimes.com/et0199/et0199s11.html

Everybody should be aware that from early into the 1900s we still ran our engines extremely well and clean on simple/abundant/cheap alcohol, and INDUSTRIAL hemp was such a critical crop for the National good/security issues of the old days, plus it made many of their clothes/textiles, that all farmers dedicated 20% of their field yeild to hemp or pay the $ equivilent to the Gmnt. Then with the sudden prohibition era for alcohol and demonization of pot = !hemp? we magically went into our addictions to oil and timber, not because they were better, far from it. Bye bye great and safer enviro products, for the oil-based plastic hazard age... and from then on hemp existed solely on Southern State's roadsides.

That's just touching on hemp's great importance and scandal in our country's history, and it's potentials are yet greater, but being ignored, and I think purposely.

BTW, trust me, Sal, even you won't mistake a delicate crop of 'bud' for massive no-bud hemp.
Did you know that at least half of what you directly handle/encounter daily could be made as well from hemp, and still look equally modern?

And we could distill alcohol from the bio-mass... which was 'conveniently' ignored during the sugar days, hmmm.

Hemp's known uses are wide ranging and legendary, it's potentials remain untapped..

Hemp's uses are wide ranging, but not legendary - it's still being used today. As for no-bud hemp, never heard of it.

OK, let's call a cut off point at our generations. Mid-boomers can recall the legends.

Your link gave promising results for the most basic uses, there are many more of high tech value to be developed.

Promising results? If promising results result in century long world-wide production declines, maybe you'd like to invest in a few buggy whip companies, too. Legends in your mind, I'll believe that.

Assuming one gets over the legal hassles with growing and haversting hemp then what does one do with the stuff? Other than biomass for local power producation it doesn't seem cost effective to ship this stuff to places that could use it since it would be cheaper for them to either grow it themselves or buy from cheaper sources as opposed to buying the expensive Hawaiian grown stuff.

One man's giant soggy bio-mess is another man's goldmine.
Those with vision, Gvnr.-like influence, and enuf luck to accomplish such a culturally changing feat successfully are much fewer these days.

Yes, but maybe there'd be possibilities for new businesses here?
Even if many smaller establishments started... clothing, rope, etc.
Life is either an adventure... or you're not doing it right!!!

                      The new and improved R-O-P-E

I'm no Poindexter, but even I can foresee 'space age' tech developements being synthesized from the stuff to allow use and opportunities far beyond the limited current think. The world is wide open for hemp entrepreneuristitures.

HI Gmt.'s only real voice in promoting industrial hemp speaks out again http://www.staradvertiser.com/s?acti...y&id=191580861
The longer we wait to get going on this the more we lose.

Re-reading helen's question about "what do you do with the stuff?" made me laff, it's more like what can't you do with it.
