Re: Hawai‘i Elects Tea Party Candidate!

Nonsense, the bill was passed, the deal was made, it's ALL in writing. All the jabbering [and newspaper articles] in the world doesn't change a contract -- and that's what we have here. If all these people were against the 10%, they shouldn't have passed the legislation. Plain and simple. To change it now is to hoodwink everyone that actively or passively agreed to it as it stands. There are no broken promises with regard to this matter because those alleged promises don't appear in the legislation. Rather, changing the legislation would result in a broken promise. You should get out of your tunnel more often, it might clear your understanding of what constitutes a promise in this context.

HONOLULU — City Councilmember Tom Berg has issued a press release sharply criticizing Mayor Peter Carlisle and City Council leadership for cronyism, ignoring the needs of West Oahu, and putting the interests of developers ahead of sound public policy.

Berg says that the rail project is not about transportation on Oahu, and cites the fact that there are no transportation experts nominated to the Honolulu Authority on Rapid Transit (HART). Berg goes as far as to call the way our City and State governments operate “sleazy.”

Below is the link to verbatim text of Berg’s official press release.

Presently it costs us taxpayers 9 million a year to run the 6 municipal golf courses...
Tom Berg believes the golfing fee should be raised so that the courses are self sustaining. What do you think?

On the face of it, of course that sounds good/correct/just.
Why are we subsidizing them anyway, are they just getting a sweet deal for no great reason?
What if the hike drives away enuf payers to not maintain their existence, couldn't that in many aspects make it even worse for eveyone?

TP's seem to go blindly for cutting off the nose in spite of the face.

Okay, that's all well and good. But, MM, can you tell me how much tax revenue and jobs to hotels and restaurants and related tourist industry is generated by those who come to HI to play on those 6 golf courses. Berg is taking a simplistic approach to the issue. MM, can you give me the rest of the equation?

I'm very suspicious, nay outright incredulous, at Berg's easy answers approach to simplistic solutions to complex issues. Don't be seduced, MM, by the populist approach for political gain. Berg has yet to prove credibility in matapule's opinion.

Whoa Matapule! If you want to make a point, it's up to you to do the research, not your ostensible opponent. It may be a good debating tactic, but we all see right thru ya[hoo].

That's his point, I think, maybe MM hasn't done his homework fully on the repercussions of knee-jerk/emotional/hidden agenda cuts to promote a valid starting argument.

A supposition is not a point, Ron. You and Matapule may suppose MM (and by extension, Berg) hasn't done his homework, but you are both proving you haven't done your own by not coughing up any pertinent facts or studies to support your speculation.

'I just don't trust simplicity', is not much in the way of valid arguments.

Reply to below: There's obviously no need for a reply, since neither of you have done more than yawn out loud.

Au contraire! MM is not my opponent, he is my friend. If he wants to convince me of his argument (or Berg's) they need to provide me with the rest of the story.

Up till this point, I never voiced an opinion on the golf course issue.
I had asked for anyone that wished to, to do so.

I figure that if the municipal courses are just losing money, in other words costing tax payers, then sell them off to private business instead of continuing to subsidize. Or raise the fees to a self sustaining level.

Many golfing visitors come to enjoy Hawaii's courses and still would whether or not the local government owns municipal courses. Probably even more so if private, since they usually do a better job and provide better service.

As for the rest of the Democratic old-boy club — Romy Cachola, Breene Harimoto, and Garcia, they could find themselves in the minority when the dust settles.
Well, with the exception of Romy Cachola (I underestimated his shameless opportunism), it appears my prediction has come true in record time:

A Council veteran who will not be able to run again when his term runs out next year, Garcia even took the unusual step of introducing a resolution Wednesday proposing that Martin replace him as chairman and that Councilman Ikaika Anderson take over as vice chairman from Vice Chairman Breene Harimoto.

Garcia said he expects a majority of members to support the resolution during a vote expected at the end of the month.

Garcia insisted that his decision was entirely voluntarily and that he was not resigning in anticipation of being ousted by a new majority.

I spent a few hours this morning at Honolulu Hale.
Sat in on a meeting chaired by Councilman Tom Berg on our city playgounds.
Another friend of mine, Mike McFarlane gave a presentation too!

That was my first time doing this and I really enjoyed myself!

Re: Hawai‘i Elects Tea Party Candidate!

The man appears to have problems in being able to constructively deal with differences from people within the GOP ranks.

                              Councilman rips Hawaii GOP

"I think the GOP is a failure here in Hawaii. I'm setting the stage to wean myself from this party of the skin heads," he said in voice mail recordings.
                              Skin heads??? Whoa!!!

Seems to be a hallmark of the Tea Party: Their way or no way. If you're not in lock-and-step with their philosophy, you're the enemy.

If you support Obama's policies, you're a "socialist." And now, "skinheads." *sigh!*

And when his slurs against the state GOP are exposed, Berg displays less backbone than a jellyfish.

On Monday Berg apologized for using the term "skin heads" to describe GOP leaders Jonah Kaauwai and Dylan Nonaka.

"Both persons I was referencing have shaved heads," he said. "It was nothing to do with race or religion or anything associated in that manner."
LOL!!! I haven't heard anything so lame since "I tried marjiuana once. I did not inhale."

Oh yeah. Don't let Jonah Kaauwai's diplomatic responses fool you. When Berg's council seat comes up for grabs the next time, the incumbent is going to face challengers coming from the GOP ranks. Mark my words.

Good thing Jonah Ka‘auwai was forced to step down then. Berg, along with Ikaika Anderson have proven to a breath of fresh air on a Council full of rubber stamps. I hope they stick around.
